A glamorous Chicago penthouse once owned by an iconic silent film actress could now be yours for $4.35 million.

Perched atop a luxury tower in the picturesque Gold Coast neighborhood, the near-century-old residence ( 14-15CD ) dates back to 1927 but has had just three owners since it was built. Silent film star Colleen Moore and her stockbroker husband, Homer Hargrave, lived in the two-story apartment first until Hargrave died in 1964. Moore, who died in 1988 at age 88, was considered one of the most famous and highest-paid silent film actresses, starring in films like The Scarlet Letter , Social Register, and The Power and The Glory, among others.

Spanning 7,750 square feet, the sprawling pad has five bedrooms, six bathrooms, light-filled living spaces, and soaring double-height ceilings in the great room. Adding to the allure, the property retains many period details, like original fireplaces, millwork, crown molding, and wood paneling.

The library has a hidden speakeasy bar.

Moore and Hargrave moved into the unit in 1927 at the height of the Prohibition era, which lasted from 1920 to 1933. In true Prohibition-era style, the home has an original speakeasy bar hidden within the library. Folding doors covered in faux leather books open to reveal a stylish Art Deco-style bar with a sink, mirrors, original ice box, glassware, and most importantly, liquor.

The double-height living room is where Moore would entertain, naturally. The grandiose space showcases an entire wall of original windows overlooking the cityscape, linenfold paneling, an original wood-burning fireplace, and an ornamental barrel vault plaster ceiling. Moore hosted several notable individuals, including John F. Kennedy, in the living room and the nearby paneled dining room. The latter room features a lengthy wooden table that can seat 22 people. More intimate dinner parties can be hosted in the sunroom, while after-dinner drinks can be served in the speakeasy. The home also has an updated kitchen with new appliances, a butler’s pantry, and a breakfast nook.

The dining room can seat up to 22 people.

The lavish primary suite is as elegant as it gets, with an oval-shaped foyer, inlaid hardwood floors, a gas fireplace, oversized windows, two dressing rooms, and a marble bathroom. Other highlights of the abode include a second bar, a private 61-foot terrace, a playroom on the upper floor, an office, a temperature-controlled wine closet, and a laundry.

Located at 1320 North State Parkway, the apartment building itself is surrounded by historic mansions, leafy, tree-lined streets, and some of the city’s best dining and upscale shopping. It also offers an array of modern services and amenities, including a new gym, a landscaped garden terrace, and a full-time doorman. Welcome to Roaring 2024.
