Is life in the city contributing to psychosis in Denver?. A study published this week in JAMA Psychiatry showed urban settings contributed to more acute cases of psychosis than rural areas. “We found that compared with rural neighborhoods, neighborhoods characterized by urbanicity and environmental exposure (i.e., air and noise pollution) were unilaterally associated with more severe psychotic symptoms, but that more severe depression and anxiety symptoms were specific to individuals residing in urban neighborhoods that also had high area deprivation (i.e., poor housing conditions, health outcomes, and socioeconomic disadvantage),” according to the study. “These findings remained significant after controlling for individual-level characteristics such as age, gender, race, ethnicity, education level, and household income.”

Migrant homeless encampment dwellers who have been swept from location to location by city crews finally won a reprieve Wednesday. On Wednesday, the city offered the encampment dwellers seven days of shelter instead of three, which was the original offer turned down by the campers. “It would hardly be a worthwhile respite before they would find themselves back on the streets with no support, scattered,” Housekeys Action Network Denver, or HAND, posted on Instagram.

A few days ago, I watched an online seminar given by the National Alliance to End Homelessness. The topic was “Targeted homelessness prevention: Stemming the inflow.”. Kay Moshier McDivitt of the Alliance referred to targeted prevention as turning off the faucet of people experiencing homelessness. The problem, she said, is that no matter how fast homeless services agencies house someone, new homeless people keep pouring from the faucet. If you envision the faucet filling a bathtub, soon the tub overflows, leaving many people experiencing homelessness unhoused.
