Mom, Apple Pie, Chevrolet and … ‘Rhapsody in Blue’
It seems every orchestra and their third cousins are playing Rhapsody in Blue this season to mark the 100th anniversary of George Gershwin’s once-controversial 1924 musical composition that combined elements of classical music with jazz piano – billed back then as an Experiment in Modern Music. Our own Santa Barbara Symphony is no exception. But it’s also been almost three decades since jazz pianist Marcus Roberts created his own arrangement of the iconic work to feature his piano trio as the soloist; an entirely fresh re-imagining of the piece more radical than even Gershwin’s original.
Why Chevrolet is Phasing Out the Malibu Sedan After Sixty Years
I bet nearly every adult in America has a Chevy Malibu story. Your friend had one or their parents did. When I got my first television job in 1980, I could only afford to buy a 1966 Chevrolet Malibu. My cousin Mike was nice enough to paint it for me. It lasted through Rockford, Illinois and took me to Grand Rapids, Michigan, for my second job. Now, after 60 years, Chevrolet is stopping production of the 2024 Chevrolet Malibu at the Fairfax Assembly Plant, in Kansas City, Kansas.
Chevrolet Malibu heads for the junkyard as GM shifts focus to electric vehicles
The Chevrolet Malibu, the last midsize car made by a Detroit automaker, is heading for the junkyard. General Motors confirmed Thursday that it will stop making the car introduced in 1964 as the company focuses more on electric vehicles. The midsize sedan was once the top-selling segment in the U.S., a stalwart of family garages nationwide. But its sales started to decline in the early 2000s as the SUV became more prominent and pickup truck sales grew. Last year midsize cars made up only 8% of U.S. new vehicle sales, down from 22% as recently as 2007. GM sold just over 130,000 Malibus last year, 8.5% fewer than in 2022.
Junkyard Gem: 1986 Chevrolet Celebrity Wagon
The beginning of the end for station wagons arrived as the second half of the 1980s dawned, thanks to Chrysler's introduction of its game-changing minivans and AMC's introduction of the even more influential XJ Jeep Cherokee (both as 1984 models), but few noticed at first. At that time, GM's Chevrolet Division still offered wagons in three different sizes: the Cavalier, Celebrity and Caprice Classic; today's Junkyard Gem is an example of the middle type, found in a Denver self-service yard recently.
