New mural on East State Street
Mandi “Miss Birdy” Caskey’s outline for a mural on the East State St./Route 33 Underpass waits to be painted. On Monday night and during the weekend, Caskey completed the first steps in painting the mural, which was commissioned by Athens County Children Services. According to the agency, the mural will represent the Children Services’ history and recognize what the community does for each other, and for children.
Former nursing home employee claims she was fired for reporting understaffing
A former employee of an area nursing home is alleging that her employer violated Ohio’s whistleblower protection law, by firing her for raising concerns about nurse understaffing and resident safety. ATHENS, OH – In partnership with the Mount Zion Black Cultural Center, WOUB Public Media is screening the new documentary called THE LINCOLN SCHOOL STORY as part of the kick-off event for Berry Day Week in Athens on May 20 at 5:30 p.m. at the Athena. The production, created by Ohio Humanities and distributed by WOSU Public Media in Columbus, follows a group of Black mothers in Southwest Ohio as they heroically fight for school desegregation.

ODOT: Bikeway resurfacing calls for rolling closure
Active transportation users will have to adjust their commute on the Hockhocking Adena Bikeway as the Ohio Department of Transportation plans to start a resurfacing project on May 21.
