Four officers killed and others wounded in Charlotte shooting

Four officers are dead and another four injured after a shooting in Charlotte Monday afternoon. Authorities responded just before 2PM to a neighborhood near Galway Drive and Denson Place to serve a fugitive warrant when the incident first began.

The wanted suspect, identified as 39-year-old Terry Clark Hughes, is accused of then firing at officers from inside a home. Authorities returned fire, striking Hughes who was pronounced dead at the scene.

More gunfire then reportedly erupted from the home, and an hours-long standoff occurred until the home was cleared by officers and two women were taken into custody as persons of interest.

Three officers were pronounced dead, four more injured and another in critical condition. The officer in critical condition was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

In a press conference, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Johnny Jennings said an investigation was underway into what he said may be the deadliest single incident for Charlotte area authorities he has ever seen.
