CHARLOTTE, N.C. ( QUEEN CITY NEWS ) — Crews battled a two-alarm fire Sunday at an apartment complex off Pineville-Matthews Road, according to the Charlotte Fire Department.

Authorities first reported the incident around 3:15 p.m. on Sunday, April 28.

Responding firefighters said they could see flames coming from an apartment building in the 6800 block of Fishers Farm Lane when they arrived.

Shortly after, the fire was upgraded to a second alarm. In total, 60 firefighters controlled the blaze in about 50 minutes.

Fire officials said no one was injured; however, at least two people were medically evaluated by EMS. The cause of the fire was later deemed to be accidental due to a grill on the second-floor balcony. About $850,000 in damages have been reported.

The Red Cross said they are helping residents of 18 apartments impacted by opening a shelter at 10 p.m. on Sunday and offering one-on-one support. Food, toiletries, and other needed “relief items” will be provided, as well as health and mental health services.

“The Red Cross has been in close contact with those affected by this fire to make sure they are getting everything they need at this difficult time,” said Jason Gudzunas, Executive Director of the American Red Cross Charlotte Metro Area Chapter. “Our team has also been working with the firefighters, supporting them by setting up a canteen.”
