The new restaurant and bar called Flight will open in Elizabeth this summer.
Why it matters: The new neighborhood spot aims to take customers around the world through its international wines and decor, according to owners Dwight and Vicki Bailey.
The big picture: Flight is in a booming area of a historic neighborhood — in the same plaza as popular restaurants like The Crunkleton , Menya and Puerta .
Context: The husband-and-wife duo decided to pilot the idea by incorporating their traveling experiences, which they've gained from taking breaks from their full-time medical jobs, into their new bar.
- Trips to destinations like Portugal and Austria inspired them to give locals a taste of places in the neighborhood that they live in.
- Since it's the couples' first venture, they plan to lean on hospitality experts like their daughter Kayte Morton, who's spent years managing popular restaurants like Supperland , to handle daily operations.
- Dwight is a physician specializing in pediatric critical care at Levine Children's Hospital; Vicki is a nurse practitioner. They're not quitting their day jobs but will pop in periodically as Kayte manages Flight.
"We started this as an opportunity to interact with people in a positive way compared to what we experience with work every day," Dwight said.
Dig in: Expect Western European-inspired small plates plus pizzas cooked in a custom Italian wood-burning oven.
- Flight's food menu will have vegetarian and gluten-free dishes plus at least three desserts, including a skillet cookie, cheesecake in a jar and tiramisu.
- The wine list will feature 150 international and domestic wines with about 30 to 50 by the glass. Other drink options include cocktails, beer and mocktails.
- "We want to help people on their journey to learn by exposing them to new wines," Vicki said.
The vibe: The 2,700-square-foot space will have indoor seating for about 60 people and 25 people on the outdoor patio.
- Various pieces of art and other decorations that the couple has gathered from their trips will be displayed throughout the space.
What's next: Flight will open in the Shops on 7th plaza at 1949-3 E. 7th St. . by the middle of the summer.
