The best things the Axios Charlotte team ate in March 2024

    By Laura Barrero,

    2024-04-04

As the weather warmed up, our team took advantage of restaurants with patio seating . Here are six of the best dishes we ate in March month.

Smashburger from Streetcar Bar + Bites in Wesley Heights

"Streetcar Bar + Bites has a cool, open-air layout on its patio, with fire pits to keep you warm while you watch their weekly screening of "The Bachelor." The best part is the owner gives you a rose. On a recent visit, I ordered the smash burger. It was juicy and satisfying, alongside well-seasoned fries." — Alexandria Sands, reporter

The Roman-style pizza at Pizza Baby East in Elizabeth

" I bit into a slice of pesto, burrata and tomato pizza ($8) at Pizza Baby East and I felt like a kid on Christmas morning. It was delicious. I underestimated how filling a 10-inch by 4-inch slice of focaccia bread would be because I also ordered the turkey, brie and orange marmalade sandwich on a bianca bun ($12) and a brownie ($3). The pizza was my favorite." — Ashley Mahoney, reporter

El Basico Burrito with steak from Que Onda in Plaza Midwood

" My dream dinner setup? A Mexican restaurant with unlimited chips and salsa, massive burritos and outdoor seating. Enter: Que Onda in Plaza Midwood. It checked everything on my list of musts with its upstairs patio and El Basico Burrito ($13.95). Extra points for the queso smother on the burrito." — McKenzie Rankin, reporter

Uncle Gene's Fish Sandwich from Jimmy Pearls

"I had to try Jimmy Pearls before it closed at The Market at 7th Street in Uptown. I ordered Uncle Gene's Fish Sandwich with a side of fries for $17. I'm glad that I finally got my hands on some of the food that landed them James Beard recognition , but I'm sad to see them leave." — Alexis Clinton, reporter

The Katsu Hawaiana from Noche Bruta in Camp North End

"Noche Bruta offers traditional Mexican fare like guacamole, salsa and chips, churros with dulce de leche and ribeye tacos. My favorite dish was the Katsu Hawaiana, chef Hector Gonzalez-Mora's take on the "Torta Hawaiiana," made with pork, guac, ham, cheese, and pickled onions on Shokupan bread — a Japanese milk bread made in-house." — Laura Barrero, editor

Spicy chicken sandwich from Good Wurst

"No stop to Charlotte is complete without a quick bite at Good Wurst. Over Easter weekend, I tried the spicy chicken sandwich ($7.95), which comes loaded with rich breaded chicken and topped with big heaps of coleslaw and pickles. Not as spicy as I would have imagined, but tasty and relatively cheap." — Katie Peralta Soloff, editor
