CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) – After measles were reported in the Mountain State last month, WOWK 13 News followed up with health leaders who say no new cases are being reported as of now.

The West Virginia Department of Health confirmed the case in a partially-vaccinated Monongalia County resident in April , marking the state’s first case since 2009. Officials say the individual recently returned from traveling from out of the country, prompting concerns about potential exposure.

“In a way, it’s also an indicator of other potential concerns around vaccinations as measles would likely be the first thing to emerge in the scenario where people are not vaccinated, according to the CDC schedule,” said Dr. Mathew Weimer, VP of Health Services at Valley Health.

While no widespread community exposures have been identified, healthcare leaders are urging the public to remain vigilant for symptoms suggestive of measles. Dr. Weimer emphasized the importance of vaccination for travelers and residents alike, as the virus is almost entirely preventable through vaccination.
