CLARKSBURG, W.Va. (WBOY) — When you should plan your garden depends on what type of vegetables you are growing and where you live in West Virginia.

Sunday night, the National Weather Service in Charleston, West Virginia issued its first freeze warning of the year, and for Monday night, there is a frost advisory in several north central West Virginia counties . These advisories are issued when it’s late enough in the spring that crops could be damaged by a frost , but in many cases, it’s best to wait until after the expected final frost to plant.

Warm season crops like cucumbers, tomatoes, green beans, peppers and squash should be planted around or after the expected final frost for your growing zone . For most of north central West Virginia, the final frost date is May 10, according to the WVU Extension Service.

On the other hand, cool season crops like cabbage, carrots, lettuce and cauliflower can survive a frost or light freeze, so they can be planted earlier in April or even March.

For a breakdown on exactly when certain crops should be planted, visit the WVU Extension’s gardening for beginners webpage . The WVU Extension 2024 Garden Calendar also breaks down everything you should be doing for your garden every day of the year and can be downloaded online.
