CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) – Dozens of people gathered at the Robert C. Byrd Courthouse in Charleston Thursday for the 23rd annual Operation Reach Out for victims of crimes, their families and the people who help them.

During the event, several awards were given to local stand-out organizations that work daily to assist their community and those impacted by violent crimes. The goal of the event is to raise awareness for victims’ rights and to educate people on the services available to them.

One brave survivor tells WOWK 13 News it’s important to continue to be vigilant to protect more people from suffering.

“Back in the 80s when this happened to me, those resources weren’t made available to me, and I love seeing all the reach here in Charleston. I was involved with them for a while being a victim advocate,” said survivor Elaine Wagner.

A few of the award winners include Mission West Virginia, YWCA Charleston and Child Protect of Mercer County.
