CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – We start off on the golf course for this three-part Everyday Heroes.

“We are raising funds to help support all the families who use our 32-bedroom house every night,” said Rachel Morrison, RMHC marketing director.

The house is the Ronald McDonald House (RMHC), and this is the 22nd annual Charity Golf Classic at Cassique on Kiawah Island. This tournament has raised over five million dollars for the Ronald McDonald House in Charleston, ensuring it will continue to help families with sick children who need a place to stay.

“It is very expensive, but we are so thankful for the community and all of our wonderful supporters who make events like this happen,” said Morrison. “Without them, we wouldn’t be able to stay open 365 days for our families and be there to make sure that all they have to do is focus on their child.”

Over $200,000 was raised from this year’s charity golf classic.

Next up is Sullivan’s Island, where we recently told you the story of Keegan Novak. The eight-year-old loves the outdoors, nature, and especially palmetto trees.

“There, the state tree of South Carolina,” Novak said. “It’s in our history, they’re in our history.”

Novak was upset because a utility company said they were cutting down around 500 palmetto trees to make room for power, so he came up with a simple sign.

“Don’t cut ’em down” stuck on dozens of trees.

“I just hope they notice them and think about how many trees are going to go down if we don’t stop it,” Novak said.

For the effort and compassion, Novak was recognized by Sullivan’s Island Town Council on Tuesday night.

Finally, it is military appreciation month. Some seniors in The Palms in Mount Pleasant recently participated in the Senior Helper Salute, a military letter drive.

Residents who also served put their appreciation in writing and sent words of encouragement to our servicemembers overseas.
