2 people injured when bus crashes into building in Washington County

Two people are injured after a Freedom Transit Bus crashed into a building on 11th Street and Garr Street in Charleroi Thursday morning.

There were 10 people on the bus when the crash happened. The two injured passengers were taken to the hospital, but their injuries are not life-threatening.

“They were crying, they were upset. They were all sitting along that wall there,” neighbor Lisa Shulnes said. “They had the paramedics checking them all out. They all seem like they were in pretty good shape, nothing serious.”

The bus was coming down Garr Street, crossed 11th Street and crashed into the storage building. Chief Whiten said that the bus may have lost its brakes or something was happening on the bus that caused the crash.

The roof of the bus had to be cut off to get it out of the building.

Charleroi Fire Chief Robert Whiten said that they are not sure what exactly happened.

“This morning the bus came down one of the steeper hills,” Chief Whiten said. “We’re not sure if he lost his brakes or maybe something was going on the bus and distracted the driver. We got a call to see and there is the bus right through the front of the building.”

Freedom Transit tells Channel that the bus was operated sub-contractor Tri-County Access, who is investigating the crash. State Police are also conducting their own investigation.
