Pasco district ponders tax revenue sharing with charter school

The big story: Florida law is clear that school districts must share revenue from their local-option property and sales taxes with charter schools in their counties. That’s a question Pasco-Hernando State College had for the Pasco County school district this week. The college this past spring sponsored a charter school run by Dayspring Academy, which superintendent John Legg helped establish more than 20 years ago, and inquired whether the charter could get a share of the revenue from the district’s property tax referendum that expires next year.

Trinity Catholic volleyball falls to Northside Christian in championship heartbreaker

WINTER HAVEN — Jeff Reavis acknowledged Trinity Catholic volleyball couldn't get much closer to a state championship than the Celtics did on Wednesday. And that's what made it so heartbreaking. "That fact is the hardest because we had our opportunities," Reavis said. "We were resilient though and showed a lot of fight." Ultimately, it wasn't enough though. A season four years in the making for Trinity Catholic volleyball 's six seniors ended two points short of the ultimate prize. The Celtics fell in five sets Wednesday, Nov. 4 in the FHSAA Class 2A State Championship to St. Petersburg-Northside Christian at Polk State College in Winter Haven, falling in the fifth set 15-13. It is TC's second defeat in the final match in the last three seasons. Nothing about Northside Christian surprised Reavis. The No. 16 team in Florida features three players at six feet tall or over, including 6-foot-2 Aaliyah Cancellari (Oklahoma commit) and 6-foot-3 Candice Holloway (Syracuse commit). That height caused problems early on for the Celtics and caused the Mustangs to play more relaxed and less timid. "They were a really formative team with a bunch of good athletes, and they made it hard on us," Reavis said.

State grant provides drones for Polk State agricultural program

Gov. Ron DeSantis announced a grant of $276,069 to Polk State College for agricultural education during a news conference on Nov. 4. The award of Workforce Capitalization Grant funding from the Florida Department of Education will expand dual enrollment opportunities for high school students to gain hands-on experience in agricultural technology, including the use of drones and other emerging technologies, Polk State said in a news release. DeSantis made the announcement during a visit to Polk State’s JD Alexander Center in Lake Wales. The state funding will help Polk State acquire several unmanned aircraft systems to be used in agricultural programs through the college’s AgriPolk initiative. Students will be able to receive certifications related to drone technology. “So, this is going to be value-added, and Polk State's really going to be leading the charge on it,” DeSantis said during a news conference. “And it's a great part of the state to have this. And I'm really excited that we're able to get that done.” In October 2025, Polk State launched AgriPolk , an initiative that combines the associate in arts degree with specialized coursework, hands-on learning and certification opportunities for students interested in agriculture, the news release said. Florida’s evolving public education system needs fact-based discussion | Column

I have tremendous respect for Pinellas County School Board member Laura Hine’s commitment to public service, her passion for serving our community’s children and her desire to improve Florida’s public education system. But her recent column, “Is unregulated capitalism the best way to educate Florida kids?,” frames the issue too starkly. Florida’s education system is changing rapidly, and the questions surrounding these changes are too nuanced and consequential to be reduced to a choice between traditional public education and “unregulated capitalism.”
