New York schools reveal major 2026-27 calendar shakeup: earlier start times upstate, fewer class days, and a late September 10 start for NYC

New York’s school calendars are shifting in two very different ways this fall, and depending on where you live, you’re either losing an hour of sleep or gaining a new date to circle on the fridge. Some districts across New York State are pushing daily start times almost a full hour earlier for 2026-27, according to a report from WYRK , while New York City just released its own full calendar with a handful of quirks families need to plan around now, not in August. These are all the details to plan for ahead of this year’s school year! The upstate start-time shakeup In parts of central New York, elementary school start times are moving from 8:50am to 7:50am , a change driven almost entirely by a statewide shortage of school bus drivers . Districts simply don’t have enough drivers to run every route at the same time, so staggering start times across elementary and secondary schools has become the workaround. Some districts are getting creative trying to close the gap without pushing clocks back so drastically. For example, Buffalo Public Schools rolled out a Parent Transportation Reimbursement Pilot Program this year, paying eligible parents 62.5 cents per mile to

New NYC law targets protesters near K-12 schools — but not colleges that are ground zero for hateful anti-Israel rallies

The NYPD must now officially report to the City Council about how it prevents protesters from harassing people around K-12 schools — but not colleges, where most hateful anti-Israel rallies occur . The council passed legislation Tuesday night requiring the report in response to Mayor Zohran Mamdani vetoing a bill in April that aimed to create buffer zones around educational institutions including colleges. Mamdani said that bill would have restricted free-speech rights. An anti-Israel protest at Columbia University’s West Lawn on April 29, 2024. But some critics said that while a move in the right direction, it doesn’t go far enough . Jewish ex-staffer says California college’s chaotic pro-Palestinian takeovers threatened her safety “There hasn’t been many protests near K-to-12 schools,” a council source said. Still, it’s “good to send a message” to prevent protesters from intimidating students and staffers, the source added. The City Council’s revised measure, sponsored by Democratic Councilwoman Elsie Encarnación of East Harlem, also applies to childcare centers but not to libraries or teaching hospitals.
