James Brown, age 43, of Mastic, was arraigned on murder and related charges in Suffolk County Court on Tuesday, Nov. 28, in the death of Umar Elquhir. Several people called 911 on the evening of Tuesday, Nov. 7, after Elquhir was found unresponsive lying on the ground outside Brown’s home in the Poospatuck Reservation in Mastic.

James Brown, 43, from Moriches, is facing second-degree murder charges in Suffolk County, New York. The charges are related to an incident where Brown is accused of shooting Umar Elquhir, resulting in Elquhir's death. Suffolk County District Attorney, Raymond A. Tierney, commended the Suffolk County Police Department for their work on the case.

On Nov. 28, Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney announced the indictment of Nathaniel Howell, 40, of Medford, who is accused of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the First Degree and other charges for allegedly possessing with intent to sell cocaine and fentanyl from his Medford residence.

Recently, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Officer (ECO) Cacciola responded to a complaint of hunters trespassing in Suffolk County. Unsure of the hunters’ location in the woods, Officer Cacciola contacted ECO DeRose and K9 Cramer for assistance. ECO Cacciola spotted two hunters walking out of the woods soon after making the call and waited for ECO DeRose to arrive to question the pair.

Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office Deputies arrested six impaired drivers for Driving While Intoxicated from Thanksgiving Eve through the holiday weekend. Four of the impaired drivers were arrested late Wednesday night into Thanksgiving morning. Deputies also arrested one driver for unauthorized use of a vehicle and criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Two juveniles have been arrested after allegedly assaulting a homeless man near TJ Maxx in Riverhead, according to Riverhead Police. Police said they received an anonymous complaint on Nov. 10 at 6:16 p.m. about a group of four to five juveniles that appeared to be in a dispute with a homeless man. When police arrived, they found the man with injuries to his face, police said in a press release. The man reported being asleep when he was struck in the head by unknown subjects, police said. The man was transported to the Peconic Bay Medical Center for treatment of his injuries, police said.

Blaise Marckesano, age 38, of Shirley, was sentenced to between 1 ½ and 4 ½ years behind bars in Suffolk County Court on Monday, Nov. 27. He admitted to stealing six catalytic converters from recreational vehicles that were parked at W.E.S. Trailer Services in Wading River over a two-day span in December 2021.
