Caledonia Spanish 2 students have opportunity to go to Costa Rica in 2027
The showcase item for the Aug. 17 Caledonia School Board meeting was a presentation by Tessa Larson about the Xperitas Student Travel Program to Costa Rica. This is an authentic immersion, travel abroad program, ¡Hola Arenal in Costa Rica. Xperitas is a Minnesota non-profit organization that offers programs for students to travel abroad. Students must have taken or be taking a year 2 Spanish class in order to enroll. The cost for this nine-day student trip in June 2027 is $2,569--which covers three meals a day, entrance fees and medical insurance--plus $1,200 for airfare. This travel experience is unique because students stay with reputable families who give a unique bonding experience with the culture, the people, the language and Costa Rica’s rich history. Xperitas has been organizing these family stays for decades, and it allows students to have a more authentic cultural experience and connection. It would also give the Spanish 2 students a goal and motivation to be able to use more Spanish and to be immersed. In addition, the students return to class speaking Spanish ahead of their classmates. The trip requires a minimum of 10 student travelers, or the cost is a bit more than listed. Larson

From parents to lawmakers, concern about rising school costs is discussed at an Onalaska roundtable
Sending kids to public schools in Wisconsin means more families are under a strain to pay for all the supplies that students need. State Rep Tara Johnson and the group Opportunity Wisconsin have called on Congress find ways to reduce the cost of supplies…mainly by reducing Republican-sponsored tariffs. Johnson spoke in Onalaska Tuesday, at a news conference blaming GOP leadership for contributing to price increases. She says for entry into school, kids need physicals, and if you pay a high deductible, “your out-of-pocket (expenses) for five kids would be hundreds and hundreds of dollars, at a minimum.”

WESTBY, Wis. — The Westby Area School District Board of Education has voted to place a new operational referendum question on the upcoming ballot in November. The proposed measure seeks to replace the district’s current operational referendum, which is now in its third and final year. Operational referendums grant school districts the authority to exceed state-calculated revenue limits, commonly referred to as budget caps, in order to maintain staff levels and school program.

Caledonia School Board reviews strategic plan
Elementary Principal John Wahlstrom walked the Caledonia School Board through the district’s four-year strategic plan, developed in 2023 with input from staff, parents, local businesses and city leaders during the Aug. 17 meeting. He focused on the first goal — reducing discipline issues and strengthening school culture, by outlining an overhaul of the elementary school’s Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) system. Goal 1 – Student behavior and discipline: Reduce discipline incidents and strengthen school culture through clearer expectations and systems like the revamped PBIS “Warrior Way.” As part of the PBIS overhaul, Wahlstrom said the elementary will also tighten up its long-running “ticket” reward system so it carries more weight with students. Rather than handing out tickets for simply meeting basic expectations, staff will be asked to reserve them for students who go above and beyond in showing Respect, Work and Belong—for example: taking extra initiative to help a classmate, cleaning up a shared space without being asked or consistently modeling the “Warrior Way” for younger students. “We can’t expect kids to know what’s right and wrong if it looks different from one classroom to the next,” Wahlstrom said. “The goal is that all staff have the exact same
