Weekly Safety Report: Fatal Crash and Three-Vehicle Collision in Southport, North Carolina
Two incidents occurred in Southport, North Carolina this week. The first incident involved a fatal crash on November 18th, where a pedestrian was pinned under a vehicle. The Southport Police Department determined it to be an accidental incident. The second incident was a three-vehicle crash on November 29th, near Dosher Memorial Hospital. The scene was cleared by the police just before 8 p.m.

Oak Island tree canopy study shows improvement, concerns
Findings from Oak Island’s latest tree canopy assessment showed some improvement over the last eight years while also identifying a few areas of concern. PlanIt Geo, a global urban forestry consulting and software development firm, conducted the assessment using data collected between 2014 and 2022. Using remote sensing GIS technology, the firm obtained source and aerial imagery that was then compared to similar imagery from 2014. Andy Evans, a GIS manager with PlanIt Geo, presented the findings to Oak Island Town Council at the board’s Nov. 14 meeting.

Oak Island program pays homage to select veterans
A new program recently approved by Oak Island Town Council will pay homage to select veterans during holiday weekends. Oak Island Honor Flags is a variation of the “Hometown Heroes Banner Program” that was created in 2006 to show appreciation to current, past and fallen members of the armed forces. Paul DuBay, chairman of Oak Island’s Parks and Recreation Board, presented the program Nov. 14 for consideration and received unanimous support from council.
