CARTHAGE, Mo. (KOAM) - A lightning strike prompts precautionary measures at Carthage's Mark Twain Elementary.

During Thursday morning's storms, the school was hit by lightning. As a precautionary measure, the school district states all students were evacuated until the Carthage Fire Department ensured that the building was safe.

"I'm pleased to inform you that all students and staff are safe," Communication Specialist Amy Cristy tells KOAM. "Students and staff were moved to the storm shelter classrooms as a precautionary measure until district maintenance gave the all-clear. They are now all back in their classrooms."

"We are thankful for the Carthage Fire Department and Police Department for their prompt response and assistance."

"A special commendation goes to our dedicated staff who remained calm and acted swiftly, ensuring the safety and comfort of our students during this unexpected event. Their professionalism and care made all the difference."
