Public health, explained: Sign up to receive Healthbeat’s free national newsletter here . Inside a small gas station, surrounded by chips, candy, cigarettes, and lottery tickets, a group of public health graduate students waited as the cashier finished helping customers. When it was their turn, Debbie Kariuki and her fellow Brown University students stepped forward with their stacks of Medicaid flyers. Through a glass partition, they explained to the woman at the register that they were sharing information about changes to Medicaid that could affect people’s healthcare coverage. “There wasn’t actually much room for us to post flyers,” Kariuki told me. But the cashier was eager to help alert others in her South Providence, Rhode Island, neighborhood. She welcomed the English and Arabic flyers, clearing out space for them at the checkout counter. She also asked for additional flyers in Pashto. The Brown students are part of wide-ranging efforts to reach millions of people across the country who are affected by major changes to Medicaid that start for certain recipients in January. To keep or obtain Medicaid healthcare coverage, these people will be required to demonstrate they meet new work or “community engagement” requirements , and they will face more

Californians are so far in favor of increasing investment in health care research but against funding restrictions on community health care clinics, according to preliminary election results. As of Wednesday morning, more than 55% of Californians voted to pass Proposition 38 while 81.8% had voted against Proposition 44 — two ballot propositions that aimed to affect health-care spending in both research and care in California. If the results hold, Prop. 38 would create an $8.4 billion bond dedicated to researching various diseases related to immunology and immunotherapy with a focus on cancer, Alzheimer’s and heart disease. About half of the bond will go toward supporting an immunology research institute, while the other half would be dispersed in research grants to other institutions and nonprofits. The measure was authored by billionaire Gary K. Michelson, the co-founder the California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, which is expected to benefit from the law's passage. He was also the biggest donor to the campaign. The institute became affiliated with UCLA in 2024 via a public-private partnership with the state and is the only institute eligible for half of the bond funding based on the criteria set out in the legislation, according to CalMatters .
