Webb City beats Carl Junction 3-1 in district championship

The Cardinals are district champs for the third year in a row.

JOPLIN, Mo. -- Webb City High School baseball wins the class 5 district 7 championship for the third year in a row, this time -- 3-1 over Carl Junction.

The Bulldogs brought the go-ahead run to the plate with one out in the top of the 7th inning. At that point, Webb City made a pitching change.

The Cardinals swapped Luke Beverlin, who had pitched 6.1 innings allowing 5 hits and 1 earned run, for Brett Korth.

The first batter Korth faced flew into a double play, which ended the game and cilnched the district title for the Cardinals.

"I knew that [Korth] was going to get it done," Beverlin says. "I had 100% confidence in him. He's been our guy all year. He closes games -- that's just what he does."

"I thought it was in the gap," Korth says. "But I looked back and saw Andrew [Young] behind it."
