With the UIL baseball playoffs near, the Canutillo baseball team has certainly found its identity.

The Eagles have put together a team that is solid on the mound, has a strong defense and finds a way to get timely hitting.

On Monday afternoon, the Eagles took one step closer to a District 1-5A title with a 14-0 home win against Andress, their 13th consecutive victory. Canutillo is 7-0 in district with three games remaining in the regular season.

    How they got it done

It was a team effort up and down the lineup.

Enrique Guerra helped lead the way with a home run and four RBIs, Ian Melendez drove in three runs, Derick Cossio drove in two runs and Isaac Garza had two hits and an RBI and pitched a five-inning shutout.

During their 13-game win streak, Canutillo has scored double-digit runs nine times.

    Quoting the winning players

"We started slow this year, but we are really playing well and having fun as a team," said Melendez, who hit three homers in a win last week against El Paso High. "Isaac pitched a great game for us and we got it done with a team effort."

Added Garza: "We're having fun as a team and we have good chemistry. We want to win district and have success in the playoffs. Everyone is contributing."

    Ysleta continues winning effort

Ysleta continues to have a nice season in District 2-5A and improved to 20-4 overall and 6-1 in District 2-5A with a 17-5 win against Parkland on Monday.
