Main Street Mercantile opens in downtown Rice Lake

Main Street Mercantile officially opened in downtown Rice Lake on Tuesday, Nov. 3, with a Chamber ribbon-cutting. It is located at 10 N. Main St., next to Moon Gate. Owners Pete Brunette and Susan Rich-Brunette had P & J Pawn at 1664 20½ St. (Highway SS) between Rice Lake and Cameron for the past several years. When the building they were leasing was put up for sale, they not only relocated but changed their business name. “I am excited to bring something unique, affordable and fun to our downtown community,” said Rich-Brunette, a lifelong resident of Rice Lake. She explained how their business got its start. “My husband and I purchased an online business in 2018,” she said. “After operating it online for a couple of years, we decided to take our business in a new direction and opened a used merchandise, pawn, coin and purchased-goods store.” Rich-Brunette added, “Our goal is to provide a unique shopping experience that is different from the ordinary. We want our store to be a place where people can come in, browse, find great bargains, sell or pawn items, and simply enjoy themselves. Most importantly, we want to be part of the Rice Lake

Barron County voters chose GOP but Dems won statewide

Barron County bucked the trend at the polls Tuesday. Although the county voted heavily for GOP candidates at the top of the ticket, statewide voters sent Democrat David Crowley to the governor’s office and Attorney General Josh Kaul will be returning to duty. Crowley ran against Republican Tom Tiffany, who declined to seek reelection to the 7th Congressional District to run for governor. Barron County voters gave Tiffany 12,613 votes, including 1,767 votes from Rice Lake. Crowley received 7,550 votes in Barron County, including 1,564 from Rice Lake. The AP called the race for Crowley at 10:28 p.m., but Tiffany had conceded earlier in the evening. With Tiffany running for governor, the 7th Congressional District seat was open to a newcomer, and Trump-backed Republican Michael Alfonso faced off against Democrat Fred Clark. The AP called the race for Alfonso at approximately 10 p.m. He earned 1,717 votes in Rice Lake and a total of 12,246 in Barron County en route to the win. Clark received 1,612 in Rice Lake and a total of 7,885 in Barron County. Fond du Lac County District Attorney Eric Toney failed to unseat Attorney General Josh Kaul but carried Barron County. Toney took 12,287 votes

Ten of Barron County’s centenarians share longevity tips

Ten of Barron County’s oldest residents shared some of their tips for longevity at the annual Centenarian Celebration put on by the county Aging and Disability Resource Center on Wednesday, Nov. 4, at Lehman’s. After a welcome by ADRC Director Jennifer Jako, three other county officials greeted the centenarians and their families. County Board Chairman Louie Okey thanked them for “your wisdom and century’s worth of contributions to our Barron County area.” County Administrator Jeff French shared some of the notable happenings from a century ago, such as the invention of the television, followed soon after by the invention of TV dinners. He said AT&T put through its first transatlantic phone call. Winnie the Poo was first introduced, and Babe Ruth hit three home runs in a World Series game as a New York Yankee. County Supervisor Patti Anderson, who also chairs the Commission on Aging and said she hopes to reach the century mark some day, told them “age is not a number,” and that “health is about balance, not perfection,” and that “staying active is the key.”

Dunn County proposes reduced services, lower taxes

MENOMONIE — The Dunn County Board of Supervisors is expected to vote on its 2027 operating budget in the coming week, as the current proposal would lower the tax rate but see a reduction in services. The proposed budget comes in at roughly $117.4 million, dropping from their budget in 2026 that came in at $129.8 million. County Manager Dan Dunbar said that total includes the cost of benefits such as health insurance. One of the impacts of the proposed budget is a county tax levy increase of 1% to $25.36 million. However, equalized property value growth throughout the county would ultimately allow the county tax rate to decrease from $4.30 per $1,000 of equalized value in 2026 to $4.04 in 2027. A decreasing tax rate has been a trend for the county since 2020. Public budget discussions started in September when Dunn County recognized a budget gap of $1.4 million. Dunbar said the budget as presented is balanced, but changes had to be made to address the deficit. “Just like anybody, we have to buy fuel and buy other supplies, and the cost of inflation is going up. So in order to meet that and in order to live

Historic Eau Claire cemetery entered into state register

EAU CLAIRE — History is everywhere, according to UW-Eau Claire University Archivist Greg Kocken. It’s often just a matter of recognizing it. The State Historic Preservation Review Board has approved Forest Hill Cemetery to enter the State Register of Historic Places, a promising step into the location eventually being seen as an entrant in the national register, administered by the National Park Service (NPS). With Forest Hill Cemetery being a landscape, Kocken says those can be harder to see entered into the National Register of Historic Places compared to pieces of architecture — buildings often carry aesthetic markers of their respective eras, as well as encompassing famous figures or historic events that took place in the past. The university archivist argues that cemeteries as a whole have a place as important cultural landmarks though, and understanding their importance has become a noticeable trend in recent years. “Right now we’re starting to recognize that those cemeteries are important parts of our communities. They’re historic landscapes,” Kocken said. “They’re part of the cultural identity of a community. It’s more than just the memorials that are present there — it’s the cemetery itself as a part of the city, and recognizing that is
