CANTON (WWJ) — A Canton man is behind bars after an alleged domestic violence incident led to a 17-hour standoff with police.

It all began around 6:15 p.m. Wednesday at a mobile home on N. Annapolis Circle — near Haggerty and Van Born Roads — after Canton police got reports of the domestic violence incident.

While authorities have not released many details on that incident, police officials say the man fired a shot outside the home. Officials did not say whether the victim was injured.

Officers responded to the home and set up a perimeter as the man barricaded himself inside alone. Authorities say officers, dispatchers and negotiators “worked to ensure the safety of all involved, including the victim of the assault, the community, and the individual inside the home.”

Negotiators spoke intermittently with the suspect throughout the evening Wednesday and into Thursday morning.

About 17 hours after the incident began, the man agreed to speak with negotiators and police officers outside the home, where he was taken into custody, according to a press release from Canton police.

The suspect, whose name has not been released, was taken to the Canton jail and is awaiting charges.

"The successful resolution of this incident without any injuries is a direct result of the professionalism, training, and restraint shown by our team,” Canton Police Chief Chad Baugh said, per a press release. “We are committed to the safety of everyone in our community, including those we take into custody."

With the incident still under investigation and under review by the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office, the police department says more details will be released at a later time.
