CANTON — Marty Ferrell is officially the Canton Police Department’s new chief of police.

Ferrell was sworn in March 27 by Canton Mayor Bill Grant at the Canton Municipal Court in downtown Canton.

“I want to thank City Manager Billy Peppers for selecting me as chief, and thank you mayor and city council — I am looking forward to serving the community and the Canton Police Department,” Ferrell said.

Ferrell served in the Marietta Police Department for 33 years, the last two serving as police chief. He was interim chief there after longtime Marietta Police Chief Dan Flynn retired, and was hired full-time at the end of 2022.

After retiring from Marietta Police, Ferrell had a brief stint in the private sector before returning to policing as Canton’s chief.

“I am very fortunate to be here today, and I am going to learn as much as I can teach to these officers here in Canton — it’s a fantastic department and this place is set up for success,” Ferrell said.

The hire comes after the retirement of Canton Police Chief Stephen Merrifield in December.

Grant said during the ceremony that it was important to find the most qualified candidate, and find one who shares the same values as the department and the city.

“We are excited to have you here with us,” Grant said.
