CANFIELD, Ohio (WKBN) – Canfield high school baseball claims a share of the All-American Conference title with Austintown Fitch after a win against Boardman , 5-4.

The win gives the Cardinals their third straight AAC title.

“Means a lot, we came into this season and no one had expectations for us,” said Canfield head baseball coach Gary Knittle. “We only have two seniors returning, we lost a big group of seniors and we got a lot of freshmen.”

Canfield Junior David Murphy hit a single to drive in the game winner in the bottom of the 7th inning. Murphy finished with two hits and three runs batted in.

“Oh, I saw a good pitch that I liked, I was just able to take it up the middle and good things happen,” said Murphy. “It’s awesome, we put a lot of work in and I’m just excited we could come out here and do this. I love being with my guys every day.”

In the loss, Boardman’s Tyler Kirlik threw five strike-outs. Kaden Mayhew, Charlie Young, and Adam Konnerth all drove in one run each.

Coach Knittle said his team is tournament ready.

“I got a little emotional with them because I told them they had a lot of potential,” said Knittle. “They lived up to it today, so extremely proud of these guys.”

Canfield gets back to action against Heartland Christian, Thursday at 5 p.m. Next, Boardman plays at Chardon, May 6th at 5 p.m.
