Oklahoma man threatens Kansas officers, standoff ends

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Kan. (KOAM) -- Authorities arrest a Bartlesville, Oklahoma man after reportedly threating an officer and barricading himself inside a home.

According to the Caney, Kansas Police Department press release, Caney officers requested assistance from the Montgomery County Emergency Response Team (SERT) to address a barricaded man inside a home. The department says the suspect reportedly threatened officers with a blunt object and made death threats against him.

The suspect entered his family's home on the 300 block of South Wood Street in Caney, Kansas and barricaded himself inside.

When the Montgomery County SERT team arrived at the home, the Caney Police, Montgomery County Sheriff's Deputies, and Kansas Highway Patrol Troopers tried to communicate with the suspect to encourage him to exit the home.

However, the suspect remained inside and refused to comply with orders to come out.

According to Caney officers, the SERT team requested additional support from the Coffeyville Police Department SOT team. After several hours on the scene with the suspect refusing to exit, the officers deployed less-lethal gas munitions into the home to encourage his surrender.

The suspect eventually came out of the home and officers arrested him.

Caney EMS examined the suspect before officers took him to the Montgomery County Department of Corrections.

The Caney Police Department says the arrest ended with no serious injuries to law enforcement or anyone else involved.

"I want to thank all the agencies who assisted with this incident," Sheriff Wade stated. "The SERT team, along with Coffeyville's team, did an exceptional job handling the situation, and with the help of Caney Police and the Kansas Highway Patrol, the suspect was taken into custody without anyone being seriously injured. Working together as all the agencies did was key to the safe apprehension of the suspect. I also want to thank Caney FD and EMS, MGSO dispatch, and Caney dispatch for their support during this incident,' said Sheriff Ron Wade.
