Cherry picking in California: Meet the Placerville planters who share their orchard
PLACERVILLE, Calif. — Cherry picking is more than welcome on a small farm in Placerville, California. Shirley Rice, an operator of American River Cherry Company, said she and her husband Reg have allowed the general public into their 20-acre backyard to pick cherries and berries for about the last 10 years. Other fruits they offer include blackberries, raspberries, blueberries, kiwis and persimmons, she said.

New ordinance gives Grizzly Flats residents a chance to build their own affordable housing after Caldor Fire
In fall 2021, the Caldor Fire scorched 221,800 acres across the Sierra Nevada and incinerated two-thirds of the El Dorado County town of Grizzly Flats. While several efforts to replant conifer trees throughout the Caldor burn scar have continued since 2022, rebuilding almost 500 structures destroyed in Grizzly Flats is more challenging due to high construction costs and restrictive county codes. But a new ordinance gives residents hope of moving out of their camper-trailers and into houses they built themselves.

Fire crews have busy start to the weekend
El Dorado County fire crews have stayed busy over the last couple days, according to the EDC Fire Protection District’s social media page. At 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 7, firefighters responded to an outbuilding and several vehicles on fire near a home off Mistywood Lane in Shingle Springs. EDCFPD Division 8101, Division 7705, Engine 28, Engine 25 and Medic 28 responded. Crews were assisted by Cal Fire Amador-El Dorado Unit Engine 2781, Engine 2782, and Cameron Park Engine 88 and Engine 89; Diamond Springs El Dorado Fire Protection District Engine 349, El Dorado Hills Fire Department Engine 86, and Rescue Fire Department Engine 383. The cause of the fire is under investigation. No injuries were reported.
Auburn's Weston receives posthumous commendation from Placer County
The Placer County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday approved a posthumous commendation for Jackie Weston for her service and leadership in the Auburn Community. Weston served as the CEO of the Auburn Chamber of Commerce and became known as a “loud voice for supporting small businesses” when she became the interim executive director of the chamber during the pandemic in 2020. Weston passed away June 2 after being hospitalized for pneumonia.
