    Track and field: Cameron girls win Heart O' North championship

    The Cameron girls track and field team won a Heart O' North Conference title at Tuesday's championship meet in Spooner.

    Cameron scored 145 points for a comfortable lead over runner-up Hayward with 124.5 points. Cumberland placed seventh, Chetek-Weyerhaeuser was eighth and Barron ninth.

    In the boys standings, Hayward won the conference title at 155 ahead of runner-up Ashland (133.5). Cameron tied for fifth with Northwestern. Chetek-Weyerhaeuser placed seventh, Cumberland was eighth and Barron ninth.

    The Cameron girls had Lexi Kuffel earn two Heart O' North titles, while Lauren Pearson and Inez Schmidt each won once. The Comet boys earned a victory in the 400 relay.

    Kuffel won the 100 meters in 12.89 seconds and crossed the finish line first for the 400 in 59.05. Pearson high jumped 5 feet, 2 inches, and Schmidt improved upon her school record for the 1,600 in finishing in 5:18.64.

    Caden Anderson, Cole Peterson, Aiden Golat and Julien Foster had a winning time of 45.28 in the 400 relay. The Cameron boys had runners-up finishes from Jax Manor in the triple jump after a leap of 39-7.25 and Preston Eldred in the 800 at 2:05.38. The boys 1,600 relay of Eldred, Manor, Colt Mikolon and Michael Gronski was second in 3:44.84.

    Adding to the Comet girls total was Kuffel finishing runner-up in the 200 as she improved upon her school record with a time of 26.26. Schmidt took second in both the 3,200 (12:13.1) and the pole vault as she improved upon her school record with a height of 9-6. Pearson long jumped 16-4 for second, and the girls 800 relay of Maddie Severt, Katie Shilts, Jordyn Lundequam and Cora Romsos took runner-up in 1:50.67.

    Pearson was third in both the 200 and 300 hurdles, and Schmidt added a third-place finish for the 800. The girls 1,600 relay of Isabella Harder, Severt, Layla Gagner and Anna Baribeau was also third. In fourth was Hailey Hince for the pole vault and Cyleigh Cherney tied for fourth in the high jump. For the Comet boys, Anderson placed third in the 200.

    Otto wins 4 titles for Cumberland

    Andie Otto won four events to score 40 of 50 points by the Cumberland girls. She was the winner of both hurdles events, taking the 100 in 15.6 and the 300 in 47.03. The senior also long jumped 16-8.5 for first and was the winner of the triple jump at 35-10.5.

    The Beavers also had Gavin Gores high jump 6-0 to take first and lead the Cumberland boys. The 3,200 relay of Ashton Brannan, Tommy Dettinger, Josh Swint and Conner Burke placed third, and Jack Owens tied for fourth in the pole vault.

    Myers collects Bulldogs' victory

    Chetek-Weyerhaeuser had one Heart O' North champion as Jack Myers took the 400 title in 42.88.

    Thor Sather finished runner-up in the boys shot put with a toss of 47-7.5 and he was also third in the discus. Ashley Robert finished second in the girls discus at 98-11.5.

    Chetek-Weyerhaeuser's boys relays of Owen Hamholm, Bryant Motzer, Wylee Huset and Myers finished second in the 3,200 relay and third in the 1,600 relay. The Bulldogs also had the 400 relay of James Chamberlain, Luke Anderson, Adam Foss and Izaiah Patrow finish fourth.

    The Bulldog girls got a third-place finish from the 3,200 relay of Ellliana Bayer, Kaylee Haas, Taya Whittenberger and Anastasia Mujwid, and the 800 relay of Haas, Whittenberger, Mujwid and Kaydence Ludwigson was fourth

    Zoe Nelson finished fourth for both the high jump and triple jump.

    Halverson runner-up for Barron

    The Golden Bears were led by Hailee Halverson placing second in the 100 hurdles after crossing the finish only behind Otto in a time of 15.87. Halverson was also fourth in the long jump.

    Barron had Cody Donica placed third in the triple jump and fourth for the 200. The boys 400 relay of Garrett Sadtler, David Pond, Devon Kerkoff and Marten von Kalben was third.

    Regionals up next

    Track and field teams now prepare for the postseason with regional meets scheduled for Monday and sectionals on May 23.

    At a Division 3 regional in Webster will be Cameron and Cumberland. Chetek-Weyerhaeuser heads to a Division 3 meet in Gilman. In Division 2, Barron travels to Bloomer.
