The Cameron baseball team earned its first win of the season in a pitcher’s dual with Spooner on Friday as the Comets’ picked up a 2-1 extra-innings victory at Spooner.

Cameron also suffered a pair of close losses earlier in the week to Barron and Chetek-Weyerhaeuser to open its season.

In Friday’s win Michael Reynolds hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Tyson Lucas for what became the winning run in the top of the eighth inning. Lucas had drawn a walk, stole second and moved to third on a passed ball.

In the bottom of the eighth Lucas sent the Rails down in order. Lucas threw 100 pitches to complete all eight innings in getting the win. He gave up just two hits, one unearned run and one walk. Lucas struck out 11 batters.

Lucas doubled and finished 2 for 3 with both runs scored to pace the offense. AJ Guerra, Ryker Ebert, Brady Bronksi, Brandon Reynolds and Cole Everson also added hits for the Comets.

Spooner had taken a 1-0 advantage after the first. After an infield single by Jesse Morales, he moved up to second on a passed ball. A sacrifice fly moved him to third and he scored on a ground out.

Cameron evened the game in the third as Lucas doubled and scored on a base hit by Ebert.

    Chetek-Weyerhaeuser 5, Cameron 2

In Thursday’s conference game in Cameron the Bulldogs had a three-run third, which was enough to hold off the Comets.

Chetek-Weyerhaeuser had filled the bases in the third with two walks and a hit. A sacrifice fly by Brady Lentz and two-run single by Aiden Becker gave the Bulldogs the 3-0 advantage.

Cameron had cut its deficit to 3-1 in the bottom half of the inning as Guerra hit a double to bring in Jayton Silvernail.

A sacrifice fly off the bat of Ethan Brown scored a single tally in the fifth for the Bulldogs and a wild pitch scored one more in the sixth. Cameron came back with one run in the sixth as Gannon Ebert doubled to bring in Lucas who had singled earlier in the inning.

Gannon Ebert was 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI, while Guerra doubled and drove in one. Ryker Ebert, Lucas and Gronski also added hits.

Chetek-Weyerhaeuser was led by Brennan Lentz going 2 for 3 with run scored and Becker finishing 1 for 3 with two RBIs.

Guerra pitched five innings of relief, giving up three hits and one earned run. He walked three and struck out five.

Conner Evitch got the win for the Bulldogs in tossing four innings, giving up four hits, one unearned run and striking out five.

    Barron 2, Cameron 0

The Comets were shut out by the Golden Bears and pitcher Zac Edwards in their conference and season opener on April 9 in Barron.

Edwards struck out six and allowed just two hits in 5.2 innings. Glendon Thompson entered in relief and didn’t issue a hit in 1.1 innings.

Lucas got the start for the Comets and had two unearned runs score in 4.1 innings. He allowed two hits and punched out eight batters.

Guerra and Michael Reynolds each singled for Cameron’s two hits.

Barron scored single tallies in the first and third innings. Adam Wirth had an RBI double in the first, and a pair of Comet errors allowed Bryce Kittleson to score in the third after he began the inning with a base hit.
