Facing off against New Glarus twice this week, the Cambridge baseball team took advantage of a prime opportunity to flip the Capitol-South Conference title race in their favor.

New Glarus, a team that shared the conference title with Marshall and Cambridge last year, led the conference by half-a-game over Waterloo and Cambridge entering play on Friday, May 3 at Veteran’s Memorial Park.

However, after the Blue Jays swept a doubleheader against the Glarner Knights on Friday, Cambridge has vaulted into the lead for the conference title race.

In the first game that was a resumption from Tuesday’s contest after it was stopped due to darkness, the Blue Jays won 4-3 on a walk-off error.

With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, senior Owen Bernhardt hit a ground ball that was booted by the New Glarus third baseman, allowing junior Kiefer Parish to score the winning run.

Senior Carter Lund also hit two solo home runs for Cambridge, hitting them in the fourth and sixth innings. Lund also scored on an RBI single from senior Devin Schuchart in the second for Cambridge’s other run.

Sophomore Jett Horton earned the win, pitching two scoreless innings of relief. Horton recorded two strikeouts. Junior Clayton Stenjem pitched seven innings in a no-decision, recording three strikeouts.

In the second game that followed the conclusion of the first game, Lund pitched a no-hitter, his second of the season, in a Cambridge 3-0 win.

Lund recorded nine strikeouts and issued just two walks in the win. Helping Lund on the mound, Cambridge scored all of its runs in the fourth inning.

Bernhardt scored sophomore Cal Nottestad on an RBI single, junior Tyler Richardson then hit an RBI single to score Bernhardt and Horton drove in Richardson on an RBI single.

With the wins, Cambridge (9-4, 7-1) is in first place in the conference title race with New Glarus (5-2) and Waterloo (5-2) trailing in second and third.

Both the Glarner Knights and Pirates have three conference games remaining, while Cambridge has two left.
