Cambridge head boys basketball coach Mike Jeffery recently stepped down after six seasons at the helm.

The Blue Jays went a combined 59-87 the last six years, Jeffery’s second stint at the helm after a previous two-year run, which saw Cambridge compile a 9-33 record.

Jeffery posted a 195-180 record as the girls basketball coach and has been coaching for 34 seasons, including 18 with the boys program and 16 with the girls in Cambridge.

Jeffery rebuilt the girls program to a competitive team in the Capitol South Conference, including three conference championships and six regional titles. The 2017-18 team reached the sectional final.

“I would like to thank all of my coaches, trainers, and support staff, here at the U,” Johnson wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

“I am beyond grateful for everyone who has helped make my time here enjoyable. I have decided to enter my name into the transfer portal with three years of eligibility left.”

Johnson, a 6-foot-3 forward, averaged 3.4 points per game and played 10 minutes per game. She started six games, scoring a season-high 19 points versus Chicago State on Nov. 12 for a Gophers team that went 20-16 and lost to St. Louis in the finals of the NIT Tournament.

Birkholz played sparingly for The Citadel, which went 11-21, appearing in 17 games and scoring a total of 12 points.

MSU Moorhead, a Division 2 school in the northwest part of the state which plays in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, went 25-6 this past season, posting 19 or more victories in the last three seasons.

Birkholz held a scholarship offer from Moorhead out of high school.

While at Lakeside, DeNoyer was twice named to the Capitol North first team all-conference team and left as the school’s career leader in scoring and assists (Birkholz went on to break the scoring mark).
