    C-I boys tennis team earns share of Mississippi 8 title

    The Cambridge-Isanti boys tennis team began this past week with a solid 5-2 victory over Chisago Lakes on Tuesday, May 7, that helped them reach an unprecedented height.

    Against Chisago Lakes, the Bluejackets swept the four singles matches: Keagen Lowman won at first singles, Micah Gustafson took second singles, Phillip Yerigan was a winner at third singles, and Aiden Knudsvig won at fourth singles. The other winner for C-I was the first doubles team of Caden Chesla and Elliot Knudsvig.

    That victory clinched a share of the Mississippi 8 league title for the Bluejackets — the program’s first league title since 1999. Cambridge-Isanti will share the title with Becker and Monticello.

    The next day the Bluejackets swept all seven matches in an important Section 7AA match against Forest Lake.

    The Cambridge-Isanti boys track team came up just short in its attempt to qualify for the Class AAA State True Team event.

    The Bluejackets finished a strong second among nine teams at the Section 5AAA True Team event hosted by Forest Lake on Tuesday, May 7. C-I scored 871.5 points, trailing only section champ Blaine, which posted 1,042 points.

    Cambridge-Isanti’s top performance came in the pole vault, where it swept the top three places. Senior Micah Wilson won by clearing 13-6 with fewer misses than sophomore Calvin Piescher in second, while junior Lucas Frank took third by clearing 13-0.

    Other top finishes included Wilson placing third in the 110 hurdles (15.90), sophomore Dominick Olson placing fourth in the discus (138-1), senior Jonas Kennedy finishing fourth in the 1,600 (4:33.97), and sophomore Hunter Jacobson taking third in the 3,200 (10:06.6).

    The Cambridge-Isanti girls track team placed fifth among nine teams at the Section 5AAA True Team event hosted by Forest Lake on Tuesday, May 7. The Bluejackets posted 700 points, just seven behind fourth-place Duluth East.

    One of the top individual efforts for the Bluejackets was by senior Hannah Bingham, who finished second in both hurdle events, posting a time of 16.84 in the 100 hurdles and a 47.53 clocking the 300 hurdles.

    Junior Alice Steman placed second in the high jump by clearing 5-0, and sophomore MaKenna Sjoberg finished fourth in both the 1,600 (5:28.66) and the 3,200 (11:40.30).

    Senior Erin Baker took fourth place in the discus with a best throw of 106-3, while sophomore Aubrey Wilson finished fourth in the pole vault by clearing 10-0.

    Cambridge-Isanti posted a 2-2 record last week, starting with a 1-0 win over Big Lake on Monday, May 6.

    The next day the Bluejackets dropped a 5-0 decision at St. Francis, then fell 3-2 at Chisago Lakes on Wednesday, May 8.

    But C-I closed the week on a solid note, knocking off Section 7AAAA rival Coon Rapids 9-4 on Friday, May 10.

    The Bluejackets enter this week with a 8-8-1 overall record and are 5-5-1 in Mississippi 8 action.

    Last week was a tough one for Cambridge-Isanti, which lost 2-0 at Sartell on Monday, May 6, before dropping a 15-0 decision at St. Francis the next day.

    The Bluejackets enter this week’s action with a 2-11 overall record and a 2-8 mark in Mississippi 8 play.

    Cambridge-Isanti placed fourth in a Mississippi 8 event hosted by Monticello County Club on Monday, May 6. The Bluejackets finished with a team score of 400, just six strokes behind North Branch in third.

    Freshman Allie Nystrom led the way for C-I, tying for eighth place with a round of 94. Sophomore Hannah Westman tied for 14th with an even 100, while sophomore Amber Grecula was one shot behind Westman and tied for 16th.

    Cambridge-Isanti finished seventh in a Mississippi 8 meet held at Bulrush Golf Club on Monday, May 6. Junior Josh Sauro led the Bluejackets with a round of 81, finishing 11th.

    The next day the Bluejackets again placed seventh in a M8 meet, this one played at Elk River Golf Club. Senior Damian Natzel fired an 87 to tie for 20th, the best individual score for C-I.

    Vikings baseball

    Following a five-game skid, the North Branch baseball team picked up both a timely and dominant 12-1 win over Zimmerman on Thursday, May 9.

    The boys then dropped a tough one to St. Francis, losing 10-0.

    After a 1-1 split on the week, the Vikings sit at a 5-10 record on the season with just four games remaining on the schedule.

    The North Branch softball team wound up dropping three straight contests to Mississippi 8 opponents before getting back in the win column on Thursday, May 9.

    On that day the Vikings defeated Zimmerman by a final score of 7-5.

    The very next day, the Vikings ultimately finished the game in rare fashion, tying the Hermantown Hawks in a 0-0 final.

    Following the pair of games, North Branch owns a 4-11-1 record.

    Vikings boys tennis

    On Tuesday, May 7, the North Branch boys tennis team picked up a win over Totino-Grace in a 4-3 final score. The Vikings ultimately swept the singles format before being swept themselves in the doubles category.

    The boys then defeated Duluth Denfeld the following day by a 4-3 score, with the boys taking three of four in singles and earning a win in doubles courtesy of sophomore Isaiah Das and eighth-grader Ethan Thelander.

    The Vikings then fell to the Mora Mustangs 5-2 on Thursday, May 9, with junior Drake Mellon and senior Ben Rossini picking up wins in singles.

    North Branch most recently beat Fridley on Friday, May 10, in a 5-2 final score.

    The team is currently 6-12 on the year after an impressive stretch of 3-1 in its last four matches.

    Vikings girls golf

    The North Branch girls golf team went to Monticello Country Club for a battle amongst Mississippi 8 opponents on Monday, May 6.

    The girls placed third overall as a team, earning a total of 394, six strokes ahead of Cambridge-Isanti (400) but 29 behind Monticello in second place.

    Individually, two Vikings ended up in the top seven places, with Ashley Bistodeau firing off an 89 for sixth place, and Jenna Minke shooting a 92 for seventh place.

    The North Branch boys golf team hosted a Mississippi 8 conference battle at Bulrush Golf Course on Monday, May 6.

    North Branch just narrowly missed out on finishing in second place as a team as the Vikings shot a 321; the boys trailed second-place Becker (320) by a single stroke, finishing ahead of Monticello (323) by two strokes.

    Three Viking golfers finished within the top 12, as Nick Melvin fired a 76 to tie for a second-place finish, while Carter Magnison tied for fifth with a 78, before Tyler Minke tied for 12th by shooting an 82.

    The North Branch track and field teams competed in the 2024 Section 7AA True Team meet on Tuesday, May 7.

    The two teams fell just short of advancing, with the girls placing second overall while the boys took fifth.

    Editor's note: The North Branch girls were one of four teams to advance as a "wild card" to the Class AA True Team event, which will take place at Stillwater High School on Saturday, May 18 starting at 3:30 p.m.

    Individually for the boys, senior Carson Weber took second in the boys triple jump finals on a 41-03.00 mark, while senior Blake Lelm tied for third place in the high jump finals.

    Brody Rothe, a junior, finished in second place in the 300m hurdles and took fourth in the 110 hurdles. Sophomore Andrew Witkowski wound up in third in the 3,200 run thanks to a 10:42 time.

    From the girls side, multiple Vikings showed up on the season’s largest stage to date.

    Junior Dakota Esget and freshman Sophia Thorsen finished in first and second place in the 100, respectively, in times of 13.04 and 13.06. The same pair would also headline the exact same place finishes in the 200.

    Thorsen took first in the 400 dash, before Esget placed third in a time of 1:01.45. Junior Ella Kuhlman finished fifth in the 800, securing a time of 2:29.04. Shaeyna Andreotti, a senior, took a first-place finish in the 100 hurdles in 16.48.

    Bombers baseball

    The Braham baseball team smacked the East Central Eagles 13-1 on Monday, May 6, before winning a tight one over its rival Rush City on Tuesday, May 7, in a 5-4 final.

    The Bombers kept its momentum soaring with another dominant 10-0 win over McGregor on Thursday, May 9.

    The boys are currently 13-2 overall on the season.

    Bombers softball

    The Braham softball team has struggled as of late, losing three of its last four matchups.

    The girls lost just their second game of the year to Rush City, who defeated them back on April 23, in a close 2-1 final score on Tuesday, May 7.

    The girls briefly regrouped by beating Pine City 10-6 at home on Friday, May 10, before losing the next two contests to Mayer Lutheran (6-5) and West Lutheran (10-3) in a double-header setting on Saturday, May 11.

    The Bombers have just two games remaining in the regular season and possess an 11-4 record.

    The Braham golf team took part in a Great River Conference battle at Northwood Hills Golf Course on Wednesday, May 8.

    On the boys side, Ethan Schroeder tied for third place by shooting a 92, the best mark for the Bombers. Riley Gould and Luke Fix would each fire off rounds of 110 and 118, respectively.

    For the girls, Madison Davis (87) took first place by six strokes, while Jenna Burmaster (103) earned third, Delaney Johnson (106) took fourth, and Elizabeth Fix (108) finished in fifth.

    As a team, the girls won the meet by earning a final score of 404.

    Bombers track & field

    The Braham track and field teams participated in one of their biggest meets of the season on Tuesday, May 7, where the boys and girls took part in the Section 7A True Team meet at Crosby-Ironton High School.

    Senior Skyler Belshiem highlighted the day for the boys, where he took first place overall in the high jump finals. Brycen Lotz, the senior, came in fifth in the discus, before earning tenth in the shot put finals.

    For the girls, junior Ava Johnson led the way, earning third in the 800 finals before sophomore Avery Shockman took 11th in the 1,600.

    In the pole vault event, sophomore Emily Davis finished in sixth place by clearing 6-6.

    Tigers baseball

    The Rush City boys baseball team rediscovered its groove after losing back-to-back matchups.

    The Tigers defeated Hinckley-Finlayson in a doubleheader on Thursday, May 9. The Tigers came away with 7-2 and 8-4 wins, shooting its record to 7-3 on the year.

    After losing just its second game of the season on Thursday, May 9, to Hinckley-Finlayson, the Rush City softball team got back to its winning ways by picking up big time wins in a double-header setting vs. Barnum and Esko on Friday, May 10.

    The Tigers earned a 7-0 win over Barnum, before beating Esko in a close 2-1 final.

    Rush City sits at a 13-2 record with just three games remaining on the schedule.

    The Rush City boys and girls golf teams went to Northwood Hills Golf Course in Mille Lacs on Wednesday, May 8, for some Great River Conference action.

    As a team the boys placed third overall with a 426. Nate Umbreit was the top individual finisher for the Tigers, shooting a 100, while Gabe Widenstrom (101), Aiden Rustad (110), Brayden Zaske (115) and Eli Umbreit (117) all followed.

    For the girls, Ruth Widenstrom was the best individual golfer for the Tigers, firing a 122, followed closely by a 126 shot by Abrina Talberg.

    The Rush City track and field team also competed in its biggest meet of the year to this point in the season when it ran at the Section 7A True Team meet.

    For the boys, Jamison Wood took home 10th place in the 100, before earning eighth and 12th in the 200 and 400, respectively.

    Brayden Ertz ran well and finished second in the 800 dash, securing a time of 2:11.91. Ertz also earned 10th-place in the 1,600, just ahead of teammate James Monson in 11th.

    The 110 hurdles saw Braden Niessen and Owen Dick earn second and third place in times of 17.61 and 17.65, respectively.

    Dick would also add a second-place finish in the long jump.
