Spectrum: Upcoming classes and workshops at DCA

CAMBRIDGE – A variety of classes are scheduled for Dorchester Center for the Arts in the coming weeks.

Intermediate Watercolors with Barb Zuehlke:
This class explores watercolor techniques including wet on wet and use of drawing gum. Students will practice learning different triad palette combinations and pulling and glazing watercolors using personal photographs and still life as inspiration.

Use of gouache and egg tempera is acceptable. Painting experience is necessary. Demonstrations and assistance will be provided by the instructor. Meets Wednesdays (1-3:30 p.m.) May 22–June 26.

Watercolor Saturday with Marianne Kost:
Instruction in this one-day workshop focuses on journaling with pen and watercolor wash. Students are asked to bring a few favorite photos, whether travel, nature or celebrations of daily life. Students will also work on urban sketching with instruction on perspective for architectural components.

Basics for the class are a journal, watercolor materials, black ink pen(s), and pencils. The instructor will have photos for architectural studies to practice simple perspective for travel themes. Bring a bag lunch unless or enjoy a local restaurant on the lunch break. May 18, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Pastel Workshop: Mastering Composition in the Landscape with Katie Cassidy:
With Katie’s guidance, this two-day workshop will help students unravel the mystery of composition. Katie will take participants through the steps of building a successful pastel painting: strong composition, value structure, engaging color, edges and detail.

There will be lots of personal attention as well as group critiques. Katie will contact each student prior to the workshop with advice on photography as a subject matter. The students will work from their own photos – no professional photography is permitted. Tuesday and Wednesday, 10 a.m.–4 p.m. each day, Sept. 10 and 11.
