How many times must California be the first of the worst before the state's leaders change course, or have their course changed for them by voters?

For the second year in a row, California has the nation’s highest unemployment rate, with the number increasing to 5.3% from last year’s 4.5%. On top of this, the state is dealing with a debt of $21 billion in unemployment benefits, after Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) used COVID-19 bailout money from the federal government to bribe voters with stimulus checks instead of paying off unemployment claims.

California has the highest unemployment rate in the country. It has the highest poverty rate in the country when adjusted for cost of living. It has the worst homeless crisis in the country, despite spending tens of billions of taxpayer dollars on it. Yet, Newsom wants to use his tenure as governor as a launch pad for a national career, and the state is often highlighted as a model for other Democratic administrations.

How much longer can Newsom hop in front of cameras and pretend that all is going well, pointing to California’s gross domestic product as if that number is what puts food on people’s tables? Ironically, the state is great for celebrities and elitists, but it is failing middle- and lower-class residents who can’t afford the cost of living that has skyrocketed due to taxes and regulations. Newsom, an elitist himself, tries to pretend that he is a man of the people and that the Democratic Party fights for the downtrodden when he and it are the ones doing the treading.

Newsom has shown a slight willingness to push back on his party’s own excesses, but he continues to maintain that California is well-run and prospering when it obviously is not for most of its residents. At some point, voters will have to call him and the California Democratic Party on its charade, because Newsom is not going to admit that he has lost the shine for the Golden State.
