Cherokee County residents urged to prepare for storm's local impacts

Cherokee County officials are encouraging residents to be prepared for local impacts this weekend from Hurricane Isaias. The National Weather Service has issued a high wind warning for Cherokee and other parts of north and west Georgia from midnight Saturday until 8 a.m. Sunday. A flood watch remains in effect for the area for the same time period. In a video message from Cherokee County Friday afternoon, EMA Director Daniel Westbrook said that Saturday's forecast calls for wind gusts of 40-50 mph, with locally higher gusts possible along ridgetops. "This will cause downed power lines and trees that could block roadways," he said. "In addition, isolated flash flooding is possible with rainfall amounts of 1-3 inches that could be locally higher in heavier rain bands. Isolated tornadoes remain a threat as well, especially Saturday afternoon and evenings." Residents are encouraged to be prepared for the storm and its effects. Cherokee County EMA advises having more than one way to receive a watch or warning. Residents should also be prepared for possible power outages and have an emergency supply kit. Stormy Saturday forecast: tropical tornadoes possible

The National Weather Service is forecasting a stormy Saturday in Rome and Floyd County as Hurricane Isaias is due to make landfall in the Florida Panhandle Friday night and will bring a lot of rain and weather as it continues to travel north. According to the weather service’s hurricane tracker, the storm was forecast to travel over western Alabama and eastern Mississippi, but Northwest Georgia will still feel the effects. “We are cautioning that there could be tropical tornadoes due to the storm,” said Meredith Wyatt, a meteorologist with the weather service. “They are shallower than a typical tornado, so they can pop up fairly quickly.” There will be heavy rains and wind gusts as strong as 50 mph, according to Wyatt, and much of Rome and Floyd County are under a flood and high-wind watch. The Floyd County Emergency Management Agency has been speaking with local and regional emergency service workers and has been closely monitoring the situation, according to Director Tim Herrington. “The governor has just issued a state of emergency for all of Georgia,” Herrington said Thursday afternoon. “We are in contact with local and regional officials and will be having a briefing Friday as we learn
