Calhoun County, AL – Highlighted by Stokes’ low-medalist performance at Eagle’s Nest, Alexandria’s boys, girls claim sectional championships, advance to sub-state

Monday’s sectional golf action served up a big day for Alexandria.

Led by low medalist Jamarcus Stokes, a freshman, at 75, the boys won the Class 5A, Section 3 tournament at Eagle’s Nest in Guntersville.

Marlee Hedgepeth’s 85 led Alexandria’s girls to a first-place finish in the 4A-5A, Section 3 tourney at Cherokee Ridge.

The top four teams and top four individuals not playing for the top four teams advance to next week’s sub-state tournaments at Twin Bridges.

Alexandria’s boys edged Southside 321-324 and prevailed in a seven-team field. Fisher Prichard shot 80, followed by Cleat Forrest at 82 and Pierson Otralek at 84.

“The girls had a rough start today but turned it around, and I’m really proud of them, but I’ve even more proud of our boys,” Alexandria coach Craig Kiker said. “I don’t know when the last time we won the section was, but we haven’t won it since I’ve been coaching.

“The girls tend to get a lot of the recognition and stuff, and rightfully so. They’ve won, but I’m proud of this group of boys. They’re a lot of fun to coach and good players, too.”

Alexandria’s girls avenged their loss to White Plains in the Calhoun County tournament, beating the Wildcats 261-278 and prevailing in an eight-team field.

Behind Hedgepeth, Avery Prickett shot 87, and Nevaeh Foster shot 89.

“Marlee and Nevaeh had awful front nines and turned it around on the back,” Kiker said. “Proud of our girls.

“All credit goes to Coach (Brenard) Howard. We were split today, so he was with them.”

White Plains’ Isabel Rogers shot 78 and finished third, three strokes back of low medalist Polly McCrackin, an independent player. Independent Ellie Cothran shot 77.

White Plains’ Madelyn Faulkner shot 98, and Maylee Stewart shot 102.

White Plains’ boys play in the Class 4A, Section 3 tourney at Twin Bridges on Tuesday.
