The annual George’s Goats Benefit Run will be held next to the firehouse in Cable at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 27.

George’s Goats is a run/walk that was started to help George Voss, a quadriplegic, reach his goal. George heard that mothers in Zambia were dying of AIDS. Grandmothers were trying to take care of their grandchildren without the necessary means.

George heard that a goat for milk would really help these grandmas provide for their grandkids. George asked everyone that visited him in the nursing home to give $25 so he could buy a goat. He had a goal of purchasing 1,000 goats. With George’s Goats for Grammas run/walk’s help, he raised enough money for 2,000 goats.

George is no longer with us, but George’s Goats run/walk still is. Through the years George’s Goats run/walk has also provided five community water wells, a gristmill, seed, food, blankets, and shirts, in Zambia.

In Gambia, the run fundraiser helped provide teacher housing and tree protection to stop erosion. In Kisii, Kenya, i helped provide a home for four orphans at the New Life Community Center.

“This year we hope to help the orphanage build a trade school so the orphans have a direction after high school,” said run-walk organizer Jim Anderson.

George’s Goats run/walk includes a 5-mile run, a 5-kilometer run or walk, and a 2-kilometer walk. The race course has some road, some rail grade, and a little trail. After the race, participants will go across the street to The Rivers Eatery for their awards and drawings.
