Redding hot-pot spot eyes opening date. Gaming's popularity | The Buzz
The historic Lim’s Café sign still towers above North Market Street, but not much else of the former Chinese restaurant is recognizable. Work on a new hot-pot restaurant there is progressing, and the owners hope to open in February or next spring. When I spoke to Haishan Chen, he told me there is still another four to six months of work. Chen will own and operate the new restaurant with his wife, Liyi Li. They also own Oriental Express, a popular restaurant in Shasta Lake that they bought in 2015. The couple’s new restaurant will be called 88 Hot Pot. Li told the Record Searchlight in 2025 the numeral 8 symbolizes luck in China, so they’re doubling their luck with their new culinary endeavor. A peak inside the former Lim’s building reveals a complete renovation of the restaurant. Essentially, the only thing left from the Lim’s era are the four walls. Lim’s Cafe closed in September 2022 after serving Chinese and American food for nearly 90 years at three Redding locations. Chen said everything inside will be brand new. The outside has been painted gray, and Chen said the trim will be accented with a different color. While the building

Redding café that 'pays it forward' sells shops, keeping them local
Redding's Caffé Pagato, which in April closed its location on the corner of Butte and Continental streets, has sold its remaining site, as well as one location that's now under development, to two other homegrown coffee businesses. Caffé Pagato's breakfast and lunch spot at Mercy Medical Center Redding is now owned by Theory Coffee Roasters, adding to Theory's locations on Hilltop Drive, on California Street and inside Redding Regional Airport. And Caffé Pagato's upcoming eatery-in-the-making, being constructed inside the Shasta Community Health Center in Redding, has also changed hands. It will join the Redding-based Black Rose Coffee & Tea, Inc., which will operate the new café inside the health center on Placer Street. Black Rose originally opened in east Redding off Old Oregon Trail just north of Highway 44 in 2018. In May 2026, Black Rose added another drive-thru kiosk on Hilltop Drive. Construction is happening on Black Rose's health center location, but an opening date has not yet been set, said a statement from Caffé Pagato's former owners, Mike and Teri Davis. Black Rose Coffee & Tea, Inc. CEO Torrie Rosales said their upcoming location at the health center "will be our first location that is not a drive-thru,

Post Office restaurant marking 50 years in Redding with throwback bash
Set foot in the 50-year-old Post Office Kitchen and Spirits and you’re stepping into a bygone era of one of Redding’s longest-running restaurants. The postal-themed decor features several displays of old-style, gold-colored metal box units that once were used to retrieve mail using a dial combination at real post offices. Another artifact is a renovated vintage cooler inside the horseshoe-shaped bar that reputedly came from an eastern Shasta County ranch that was once owned by Bing Crosby and Clint Eastwood. “That's what we've been told,” said Leah Sullivan, who owns the restaurant and bar with Hallie Hawkins and her father, Nolan Hawkins, who you’ll most likely find doing the cleaning in the mornings. Party time To mark the restaurant’s five-decade legacy, the owners are throwing a party from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. this Saturday, Oct. 17, 2026. They’ll offer throwback prices in addition to their popular weekend brunch, which offers an all-you-can-drink mimosa bar plus all-you-can-eat food from its Bottomless Menu for $45. The celebration will feature live music during and after brunch, a comedy night, a 1970s-themed costume contest and a nighttime DJ. The all-day party is a chance for longtime regulars to gather and share their stories

New restaurant and hotel arrive in the Redding area | The Buzz
When KC Borders saw that Taphouse Pizza Company in Happy Valley was for sale, she contacted her friend, Tish Gooch, to float an idea she had. “So, I reached out to her and I said, ‘You know, this could be really cool.’ And she actually lit the fire in me, you know, (she said), ‘Let’s do this,’“ Borders recently told me. This is The Backroads Eatery & Events, a new restaurant on the southeast corner of Happy Valley Road and Olinda Road in the Country Market shopping center. It's a spot that has had several restaurants over the years, most recently Taphouse Pizza. Borders said they hope to open Nov. 1. Right now, they are spending eight to 12-hour days cleaning up, painting, and picking out new flooring as they work to put their personal touches on the space. “I’m not locally from here, but I’ve lived here for like 12 years,” Borders said. “We kind of came up with the concept the backroads just cause it’s where we live. I mean, this is in the backroads. It’s the countryside, it’s where our kids are growing up, playing sports, they’re raising animals in 4-H and FFA (Future Farmers of America),

Shasta Inka brings unique Peruvian flavors to Redding
Abel Foelster, the sole owner and operator of the Peruvian food truck Shasta Inka, feels bad for us in Redding. Why? "You have a lot of sucky food everywhere. You don't have that many choices, you know, only Mexican and American and maybe Italian," said Foelster. Shasta Inka, however, is on the path to change that — diversifying the cuisine options in Redding and offering what Foelster said is "one of the best foods in the world." "(Peruvian food) is very good. People that eat my food like it. I have a lot of repeat customers ... especially when I went to Plantable. I went there last Friday for the first time and everybody (said) 'OK this is so good,' said Foelster. Shasta Inka's focus is on serving up authentic northern Peruvian food, emphasis on northern. According to Foelster, who grew up in northern Peru and learned to cook from his grandmother, each region of Peruvian cuisine is unique. Northern Peruvian food, he said, is traditionally "prepared fresh the same day," a principle which he implements at Shasta Inka and has been implementing since he started cooking at just 3 years old. "I usually wake up at 6 a.m. in

Smack N' Burgers a new age burger scene with old-school charm
At Market Street Smack N' Burgers, everything revolves around the fusion of the old school and the new school. According to the husband and wife duo who own the joint, Kevin Le and Amanda Meuy (pronounced May), their Smack N' burgers — most of which come with a crispy smashed patty, American cheese, their signature Smack N' Sauce and all the traditional veggie fixings on a potato bun — were designed to be a combination of the simplified smash burger that took the world by storm over the last decade, and the classic veggie-stacked burger. But whereas the old-school style involved "frozen pucks you throw on (a grill)," Le said, Smack N' Burgers prides themselves on their fresh, never frozen, angus beef and vegetables prepped for service daily. "Nothing's sitting for two or three days or whatever it is. It's that day," said Le. The historied building that houses Smack N' Burgers has also been imbued with a modern touch. Located on 3443 South Market Street, the building has long been the home of old-school burger spots. Most will remember it as Pop's 50's Place , but before that it was an A&W Root Beer drive-in in 1960s and '70s,

2 Redding restaurants, gaming lounge close. IHOP's back | The Buzz
While the restaurant cited several things that led to its closing, the Olney Creek Bridge replacement project certainly played a role in Bird & Beef’s decision. The restaurant, which opened in November 2025 in the old Snack Shack building on Eastside Road, posted on its Facebook page on Sept. 9: “Over the last couple of months, Bird & Beef has been navigating a lot of changes with the construction on our road, traffic flow, staffing, and rising food costs.” Bird & Beef is just yards away from the bridge replacement project, which has been long delayed. But work has kicked into high gear over the last several months. That work has reduced traffic to one lane for portions of Eastside Road. Vehicles traveling north and south are piloted via temporary traffic signals. The wait for the light to turn green backs up traffic on Eastside Road in both directions. In its Facebook message, Bird & Beef stated the work made it a challenge for customers. “We’re incredibly grateful for all the love and support you’ve shown us over the last year. Our joy has been getting to cook for you, create something new, and bring fun, creative food to the

Anthony’s Bar & Grill is a Mediterranean odyssey into food and drink
Stepping into Anthony’s Mediterranean Bar & Grill in downtown Redding is best described as two experiences in one. There’s the restaurant side, where diners can explore the healthy flavors of Greek cuisine, and then there’s a hidden part in the rear – a modern-day speakeasy that caters to connoisseurs of top-shelf liquor. Anthony’s owner Amin Wahbi declares on his website that he has the best Greek food in the North State. “Of course,” he says. “We have really good food.” Wahbi has pretty much cornered the market on Greek fare in Redding. Originally from Syria, Wahbi moved to Redding in 2007 when he was 24. He came here after living in Michigan for 4 years, where he was in the liquor business. He purchased Bob’s Liquors on Hartnell Avenue, which he still owns, and in 2011 opened the Greek Shack in a blue hut next door. Wahbi expanded by opening the original Anthony’s Mediterranean Cuisine in July 2015 on Eureka Way in west Redding. His loyal fan base was disappointed when he closed that location in 2021 in his quest to open a full restaurant and bar. He also operated a drive-thru kiosk called Xander’s Greek Gyro on Churn Creek

Great Harvest still coming to Hartnell? Downtown mural vanishes
It has been over a year since news broke in this column that Great Harvest Bread was returning to Redding under a new franchisee. The former operators who ran the franchise since 2007 on Hilltop Drive in the Chuck E. Cheese shopping center sold the business. The new owners planned to revive the brand in the former Round Table Pizza building on Hartnell Avenue. A coming soon sign went up. To date, no one has applied for a building permit with the city to start work on the new Great Harvest. I recently spoke to Ron Stickney, who is part of the new ownership group, and he told me they still plan to open Great Harvest Bakery & Cafe. He said the parent company had sold and that in part was holding up the process. Stickney's group does not own the building. Meanwhile, this past spring, the former pizza building showed up on the city’s code enforcement radar. In his administrative compliance order, Neighborhood Preservation Officer William Eddins noted several violations, including blight, the buildup of trash and debris, and the condition of the parking lot. The building’s owner had until May 18 to comply. “Permits from the building department

From Jalisco to Chattanooga to Redding, Los Gordos taqueria's story
Taqueria Los Gordos’ two locations have been mainstays among Mexican restaurants in Redding going on 20 years. Their longevity stands out considering there’s plenty of choices for Mexican food, from fine dining to taco trucks. Both locations are family-run with similar menus. The original site on Churn Creek Road opened in 2005 and the second one started downtown not long afterward. Luis de la Torre, the 24-year-old son of his father, also named Luis de la Torre, tells the story of how their second spot came to be. His father opened the downtown eatery in 2006 on the advice of his brother, Alfredo, who already was operating the original Los Gordos in south Redding. As the story goes, Alfredo told his brother at the time that Redding would be a good place for another Mexican place. Opening downtown would be a leap of faith for the family, considering patriarch Luis de la Torre and his family would have to travel some 2,500 miles and leave a restaurant they already were running in Chattanooga, Tenn. “(Alfredo) just told us that business was going good over here. You want to try putting one over here? I mean, it's a growing city,’” the

Redding game lounge, inspired by father, son dream, opens | The Buzz
Anthony Spengler and his father, Joshua, had a dream of opening a themed restaurant and bar, where Joshua would be the chef and Anthony would operate the front of the house. "So my father was a chef for 20-plus years and we had this pipe dream for him to be my cook and I wanted to run the business," Spengler said. Joshua Spengler passed away in 2017. “I was trying to figure out what do with my life and I decided to pursue that dream that me and my dad had,” said Spengler, who eventually got a degree in business administration. Spengler recently opened Games and Brews in the Westside Village shopping center in south Redding. It’s at least the third game-themed business to open in Redding, joining Bonus Round and Hordes & Boards. Games and Brews, at 6446 Westside Road (Suite A), focuses on board and card games, including role-playing games like Dungeons & Dragons. It also hosts events like trivia and movie bingo night. Recently, it had a Star Trek trivia night hosted by Brain Battle Trivia. Spengler said the business opened on Sept. 5. He is waiting for his state Alcoholic Beverage Control license so he can
