Academy of Model Aeronautics officials ponder sale of local property
MUNCIE, IN — Officials with the Academy of Model Aeronautics are contemplating selling the group's 1,100-acre property in Delaware County. For more than three decades, the AMA has operated an international aeromodeling center and National Model Aviation Museum at the site along East Memorial Drive in Liberty Township, over the years drawing thousands of hobbyists from all over the world. In recent weeks, rumors have circulated that the AMA might be selling its Delaware County property to make way for a data-center facility. Local officials — including Mayor Dan Ridenour, the Delaware County commissioners and staff for the Delaware-Muncie Metropolitan Plan Commission — maintain they have received no information about plans for a data center. Concerns about possible plans for a data center have prompted a local group, Protect Delaware County, to host a "public town hall" on the topic, set for 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 26, at Oakwood Retreat center, 3801 S. Delaware County Road 575 E. At a meeting of the county commissioners on Monday, Oct. 19, a member of that organization, Jackson Franklin, said he "and many others" are concerned about rumors of "a data center coming to Muncie, specifically the east side near the reservoir."
