High fuel prices squeeze local agencies' budgets

Since the beginning of the year, drivers throughout the nation have come to dread the weekly stop at the gas station for a fill-up. According to the fuel monitoring service of the American Automobile Association, the national average for regular gasoline has spiked from $2.94 a gallon in January to an average of $4.48, an increase of $1.54 since the beginning of the year. The situation for diesel is even worse. In January, the national average for diesel was $3.71 a gallon; now it has jumped to $5.98, an increase of $2.27 per gallon. In Wisconsin, the situation is not as bad for gasoline, but a lot worse for diesel. Statewide, as of Sept. 27, regular gas is averaging $4.32 per gallon, but diesel fuel has hit a record average of $6.62 per gallon. AAA says the average price of gasoline in Ashland County is $4.39, while it is $4.47 in Bayfield County. Still, it could be worse; in Iron County, the average price of gas is $4.51, the highest in the state. That diesel price is something that should be particularly concerning for all consumers.
