The Battle Mountain Humane Society, located just north of Hot Springs on Hwy. 385, is a no-kill sanctuary for dogs and cats which took in a total of 370 animals in 2023 (183 dogs / 187 cats). They however found new permanent homes for 178 dogs and 173 cats for an adoption rate of 97% and 93% for cats last year.

This drawing by Jim Hatzell is inspired by a photograph of Roger Klein taken by Kathleen Matthews of Spearfish; Hatzell added the smile and the can in Roger’s hand. HOT SPRINGS – This past January, the Can Man Trade Scholarship Fund (in memory of Roger Klein) had one of its ‘someday’ wishes come true. Back in 2021, when Jacki Lockwood and Dusty Pence were organizing the Can Man Fund, they imagined having an image of Roger Klein. They wanted something respectful but also fun that could adorn tee shirts and other merchandise, honor and remember Roger and of course help raise more scholarship dollars.
