Editor's note: This story contains graphic language that could be offensive to some readers. Jackson City Councilman Kenneth Stokes called a woman a “bitch” during the council’s Nov. 3 meeting, prompting chants of “Kick him out!” and a 4-3 vote to recess for an hour. The derailed meeting was later postponed. The outburst followed Stokes’ introduction of two controversial ordinances — one to rename part of Medgar Evers Boulevard to honor slain Senatobia child Kohen Wiley, the other to repeal Jackson’s data center moratorium. Many residents, already disgruntled over meeting on Election Day , spoke in opposition to both ordinances. Members of the Evers family offered condolences to Wiley’s family but urged the council to find another way to honor him. They said they had not been contacted about the proposal and objected to dividing a boulevard honoring the civil rights leader. Data center opponents, meanwhile, questioned why the council would consider lifting the moratorium before regulations were finished. During her public comment, Candace Abdul-Tawwab, who has opposed data centers at previous council meetings, played a recording she described as data center noise and warned that residents could hear it around the clock. Other speakers questioned the facilities’ economic benefits

Before learning his punishment, Banks stood before Jordan and apologized for his actions, acknowledging that he had betrayed the trust of the people who elected him.
