NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) — A Bronx man was sentenced to prison on Friday for the 2022 shooting of an NYPD officer who was attempting to arrest him following a domestic dispute with his girlfriend, prosecutors said.

After pleading guilty to second-degree attempted murder on April 10, Raheen Joye, 43, was sentenced to 19 years in prison and five years’ post-release supervision, the Brooklyn District Attorney's Office said.

At about 8 a.m. on Dec. 21, 2022, Joye and his girlfriend had an argument inside of 277 Gates Avenue in Bedford-Stuyvesant, during which the defendant kicked a hole in the wall, prompting his partner to call 911.

Fifty minutes later, police met Joye and his girlfriend in front of the building.
The responding officers interviewed both individuals, and Joye admitted to kicking the hole in the wall.

Prosecutors said that when police told Joye that he was going to be arrested, he tried to run off. Police officers Orlando Adorno, Angel Valenzuela and Gina Williams Gordon attempted to subdue the defendant and he resisted, pulled a blue gun from his pocket and fired one shot that hit Adorno in the foot.

After the shooting, Joye fled on foot with officers in pursuit. Two other cops joined the chase when the defendant reached Monroe Street, and Joye ran toward officer Christopher Bowie.

Joye pointed the blue handgun, which remained visible during the chase, at Bowie and officer Alexander Bido. Gunfire was exchanged, prosecutors said.

The defendant was shot twice in the leg and fell to the ground, dropped the gun and was apprehended by police, officials said. He was taken to NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital and treated for his injuries.

Adorno was treated for a gunshot wound to the foot and Valenzuela was treated for injuries to the ankle at an area hospital.

“Police Officers put their lives on the line every day while responding to all kinds of disputes,” Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez said. “Luckily Officer Orlando Adorno, and the other responding officers, were not seriously injured or killed by this defendant’s decision to open fire on police.”
