BROKEN ARROW, Okla. — It's not a bad thing to shoot like a girl. This weekend, women got the chance to learn firearm skills to protect themselves.

Hundreds of people came out to Shoot Like a Girl’s mobile range this weekend at the Bass Pro Shop and Cabela’s.

One firearms instructor said a lot of the times the women are single moms or have inherited a gun and they don't know what to do with it.

“It’s about building confidence one shot at a time,” instructor Tee Buzz said.

Buzz said as certified instructors this is what they do not just in the mobile range, but in their personal lives too.

“This is a service for us and we're giving back and giving empowerment to people who are wanting to delve into this world of firearms or archery and they don't know where to start,” Buzz said.

At the event, people were taught about using a bow and arrow, a pistol and a rifle.

“When you finish pistol you move on to the rifle. The rifle is always and interesting concept for people because they have an idea about what a rifle experience is and when they have here they realize we’ve demystified that, and they’re more comfortable with using all of the tool,” Buzz said.

Buzz said they are changing lives one shot at a time.

“We get a number of single moms and we get people who have inherited firearms and they don’t know what to do with it. Specially for women who have always had someone they felt to protect them and they may find through divorce or through death of a husband that they are the primary protector and so this really starts the mind working on, ‘How do I protect myself and protect the people that I love,’” Buzz said.

Americus Colquitt, said she has never done anything like this before, but feels more prepared after going through the introductory training.

“I’m a single mom so I need to learn this stuff. I feel like this helps a lot to learn how to protect myself and my kid,” she said.

Colquitt said she isn’t as nervous anymore now that she has this training.

“It helps in the long run especially, you never know what’s going to happen and you can always have that safety with that gun and if you don’t know safety about a gun you can always come in here and they have lovely ladies to help,” she said.

Shoot Like a Girl’s mission is to empower women to participate in shooting sports with confidence.

“We often talk about what's the impact story when we leave every weekend, but most of the times not only are we impacting our guests but they're impacting us because they're sharing really personal stories about why they're here and so we're able to meet them where they are and get them to the next level,” Buzz said.

Buzz said Shoot Like a Girl is not just for women, it’s for anybody over 18 who wants to learn.
