PREP FOOTBALL LOOKAHEAD: Top seeds return to action in playoffs
The top seeds in the IHSAA begin their respective playoff runs this weekend after a week off. There were no upsets in the first round of the 6A playoffs last week, although Kuna came the closest to pulling one off against Boise. But the Brave put all their chips on the table with a late two-point conversion to get past the Kavemen for their first playoff win in 34 years. Their reward? A seven-hour bus trip north to face the No. 1 seed, Coeur d’Alene, in the quarterfinals. The Vikings (9-0) are the only undefeated team in the 6A classification, with the top-ranked scoring offense (40.3 PPG) and defense (9.8 PPG). An upset-minded Boise squad will look to keep its historic season going with a state semifinal appearance. For the second game in a row, Rocky Mountain (7-2) takes on Mountain View (7-3) in a postseason edition of the Battle of the Mountains rivalry game. While there won’t be a postgame trophy handed out to the winner, much more is on the line in a quarterfinal matchup. The Mavericks bounced back in a big way last week, defeating another rival, Meridian, in the first round of the playoffs, 48-14. Mountain

STATE VOLLEYBALL ROUNDUP: Defending state champion Skyview falls out of tournament
After sweeping Timberline in the first round of the tournament on Thursday, Skyview's second day at Coeur d’Alene High School saw the Hawks season come to an end. Skyview lost both of its matches, first to Madison, then Rocky Mountain, to bow out of the double elimination bracket. The defending state champs lost 3-1 (25-22, 20-25, 13-25, 21-25) to Madison, setting up a match with the Grizzlies later in the night in a loser-out game. Rocky Mountain also won that match 3-1 (25-20, 20-25, 25-23, 25-19) to remain alive for a state championship spot. Before beating the Hawks, the Grizzlies took down top seed Rigby 3-0, who lost both of its matches in the tournament. Also staying alive in the bracket was Eagle, who beat Timberline 3-2 (22-25, 24-26, 25-16, 25-17, 16-14) to begin its day Friday. But the story of the tournament continues to be Owyhee, who yet again upset another team, this time No. 4 Post Falls, to set up a date with Madison on Saturday for a spot in the state championship. The No. 8 Storm won 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-19) over the Trojans. Eagle then knocked Post Falls out of the tournament with a 3-0 win.
