Democrats extend rare run of control in Dutchess County Legislature

In 2025, Democrats took the majority in the Dutchess County Legislature, 15-10. That majority is poised to be held onto in 2027, with a slightly larger margin. According to unofficial results posted by the Dutchess County Board of Elections, the legislature will have a Democratic majority until the next even-year election in 2028. Before 2025, the Democrats last secured a majority in 2007, for a two-year period from 2008 to 2009 . Before that, Democrats had not controlled the legislature since 1977, according to Journal archives. Democratic candidates are poised to take 16 of the 25 district seats up for election this year. "Last night was a powerful reminder of what we accomplish when we vote, and I am deeply grateful to everyone who prioritized making their voice heard at the ballot box," said Yvette Valdés Smith, legislature majority leader, in a statement.
