Woman dies from flu in Sacramento County, first death of 2026-27 season

Public health officials on Wednesday announced a woman died from complications related to influenza, making it Sacramento County’s first flu-related death of the 2026-27 season. The woman who died was in her 50s with underlying chronic medical conditions who was not vaccinated against the flu, according to a news release from the Sacramento County Public Health. Officials said the woman developed respiratory symptoms in mid-October and was diagnosed with influenza A. She was hospitalized a few days later and died shortly after. “This is a stark reminder that the flu can cause serious illness and even death, but vaccination remains our best defense,” county Public Health Officer Dr. Phuong Luu said in the news release. “Everyone aged 6 months and older should get vaccinated for influenza now, especially with flu circulating very high in California currently.” Health officials said the county’s first flu-related death this season comes about a month earlier than last year, a death that was reported in late November 2025. They encouraged all residents to protect themselves by getting vaccinated this fall. Vaccines are key in preventing and protecting against respiratory viruses including flu, COVID-19 and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), health officials said. Sacramento County Public Health

Democrat declares win, Republican doesn't concede in Sacramento-area Assembly race

Democrat Amy Slavensky declared victory Friday evening in the competition for a Sacramento County Assembly seat over Republican incumbent Josh Hoover. Her lead grew to 53.1% of the vote for the 7th Assembly District after the county released updated results earlier in the day. They are separated by more than 7,000 ballots. “I’m ready to go to work for the people, no matter who they are, where they come from, or who they voted for, because that’s how I serve and that’s the job,” she said in a statement. But Hoover said he was not ready to concede. “I just think it’s way too early,” he said. “We want to let the elections officials do their job.” The district includes Citrus Heights, Folsom and Rancho Cordova and has 14,000 more Democrats than Republicans. Yet Hoover has held the seat since he upset a Democratic incumbent in 2022. The contest is one of several Democrats are hoping to flip so they can expand their supermajority in the Legislature. The seat overlaps with parts of the 6th Senate District, where Republican incumbent Roger Niello, R-Fair Oaks, is only leading by a slim margin . Sacramento County election officials will release more results

Rodent enters Sacramento restaurant during health inspection. What else was found?

Sacramento County Health Inspectors gave a red placard to a soul food restaurant after finding about rodent droppings throughout the facility in addition to the live rodent. What do these inspections mean? While a yellow placard signals two or more major violations, these are typically corrected or mitigated during the inspection, according to the Sacramento County Retail Food Inspection Guide . A red placard, however, signals “imminent danger to public health and safety” and suspends an establishment’s health permit until violations are corrected. This could include, but is not limited to, major vermin contamination . In contrast, a green placard means a restaurant passed inspection. The county performs about 14,000 inspections annually and about 97% of establishments pass, spokesman Ken Casparis previously told The Sacramento Bee. Approximately 1% of inspections result in a closure, he said. These were the results of Sacramento County food facility inspections for Thursday, Oct. 29, through Wednesday, Nov. 4. If an inspection listed below needs clarification, business owners can email The Sacramento Bee at servicejournalists@sacbee.com . Updated Sacramento County election results: Cofer widens lead over Guerra

Flojaune “Flo” Cofer increased her lead over Sacramento City Councilmember Eric Guerra on Friday in a closely watched race for the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors, as election officials resumed counting hundreds of thousands of ballots from Tuesday’s midterm election. Cofer had received 54.5% of the vote compared with Guerra’s 45.5%, according to updated unofficial results released Friday afternoon by the Sacramento County elections office. The race to succeed longtime Supervisor Phil Serna in the 1st District remained too early to call as election officials continued processing mail-in and provisional ballots. “’Having an almost 10 percentage point lead after just the first week, we’re definitely excited about the possibility of winning,” Cofer campaign spokesperson J.T. Ghim said. He went on to say that it’s important that more votes be counted before declaring a winner. Guerra said in a statement that he would “like to be in a different spot” but that he’s “going to let the process play out.” The California Secretary of State’s Office estimated Friday that Sacramento County had 329,699 ballots remaining to be counted as of noon, more than the 271,406 ballots processed through Election Night. The county has 920,998 registered voters. Those outstanding ballots were spread

Sacramento City Unified to delay holiday paydays amid cash concerns

Sacramento City Unified School District has traditionally paid staff early in November and December, ahead of the holidays. This year, however, the district is moving those paydays to the end of each month after its fiscal overseer warned that the district would not have enough money on hand to issue paychecks on the scheduled dates. The shift comes as the district works to address a structural deficit of about $222 million through spending cuts and other savings. In an email to its staff on Oct. 28, the district said the Sacramento County Office of Education had directed it not to pay employees before receiving its monthly state funding payment. “As you are aware, the Sacramento County Office of Education (SCOE) is closely monitoring all our financial decisions,” the district’s communication office wrote in the email reviewed by The Sacramento Bee. “This past Friday, SCOE informed us that we would not be permitted to pay staff before receiving our monthly state apportionment which occurs near the end of the month.” As a result, the district said it would move its November and December paydays from Nov. 20 and Dec. 18 to Nov. 30 and Dec. 30. SCUSD confirmed the shift on

As deadline nears, Sac City Unified's budget could face state review

The clock is ticking on Sacramento City Unified School District’s revised budget, as its fiscal overseer, the county education office, must decide by Monday whether to approve or reject it. But the two sides have yet to bridge their differences over the budget. Now, the district is preparing to seek state help reviewing its budget if the revised budget gets rejected. The looming budget decision comes amid SCUSD’s yearlong fiscal crisis, with the district and Sacramento County Office of Education still at odds over how to address its $222 million structural deficit. By Monday, the Sacramento County Office of Education must decide whether the district’s budget revisions address its current and future financial obligations. SCOE has already signaled concerns about them, warning that the revised budget relies on uncertain revenue and solutions outside the district’s control. The district faces three possible outcomes. If SCOE approves the revised budget, the district avoids a Budget Review Committee, which would bring added scrutiny. If SCOE disapproves it, the budget goes to a BRC. The committee would have three fiscal experts selected by the district board from a list provided by the state superintendent, and it would review the budget and could recommend changes.
