Father McGivney Shuts Out Granite City in Boys Soccer
Granite City’s boys soccer team fell 2-0 to Father McGivney Catholic on Monday night at Granite City High School. The Warriors battled throughout the non-conference matchup but were unable to find the back of the net as Father McGivney’s defense recorded the shutout. Granite City entered Monday’s game looking to build off a recent 5-2 victory over Civic Memorial on Sept. 28. The Warriors followed that win with a narrow 2-1 loss to Belleville West on Oct. 1 before returning home to face a Father McGivney team that has been one of the stronger teams in the area this season. The Griffins entered the contest with a 9-3-3 overall record and a perfect 6-0 mark in Gateway Metro Conference play. Father McGivney had also posted nine shutouts during the season coming into Monday’s matchup, making it a difficult offensive challenge for the Warriors. Neither team was able to score in the opening half, sending the teams into halftime tied 0-0. Father McGivney broke through in the second half, scoring twice to take a 2-0 advantage. Granite City continued to compete but could not generate the goal it needed to get back into the match. The loss dropped Granite City to
