Pearl resident describes close call when massive tree falls on house during storms
PEARL, Miss. — Large areas of Rankin County received heavy damage from Thursday’s storms. At least one family in Pearl is counting their blessings. “If it was like 5 or 10 feet to the right, I would’ve been in my bed. I would’ve been laying in bed with a tree in my lap,” said Pearl resident Jace Russell. “I just heard the wind get horrible, and my windows started shaking. Then I heard the tree slowly start cracking. It started getting louder and louder, and then all I heard was a loud pop, and two or three seconds later, it just came down on the house and scared me to death.”
31,000 power outages reported in Central Mississippi

SSC places 8th and OLA 11th at Class 3A state track and field championships
The Saint Stanislaus Rock-A-Chaws went to Pearl on Tuesday with just four competitors in five events but managed to turn in several personal bests and score 33 points to finish eighth overall out of 26 teams in the Class 3A state track and field championships. Tylertown won the boys title with 117 points.
